LIVINGSTON MANOR – The Liberty Redhawks picked up their first win of the season Monday night, sweeping the Rockland Wolves 3-0 on the road.
Liberty came out strong in the opening set and had built an 18-10 advantage by midway through. The Redhawks continued to control the action from there, outscoring Rockland 7-2 down the stretch to secure a convincing 25-12 win.
Rockland responded with a much stronger performance in the second set. After an early back-and-forth battle, Liberty put together a six-point run to take an 8-3 lead and eventually stretched the advantage to 13-7.
The Wolves refused to let the set get away from them. Rockland closed within three before a longer run eventually tied the set at 15-15. The Wolves kept the momentum going and pulled ahead 17-16 before gradually building a 21-18 advantage.
With Rockland threatening to even the match, Liberty came alive again. The Redhawks closed the set on a 7-0 run, erasing the deficit and taking a 25-21 victory.
The third set began as the closest of the night, with the teams’ trading points through ties at 2-2, 4-4 and 6-6. Rockland appeared to be carrying some of its second-set momentum forward, but Liberty suddenly broke the deadlock with six unanswered points to take a 12-6 lead.
Rockland chipped away at the deficit and pulled within 17-13, but Liberty answered with another dominant run. The Redhawks scored the final eight points of the night to take the set 25-13 and complete the sweep.
“It was our first win this season so that’s great,” Liberty coach Macy Shamro said. “Hopefully this is building up for the next few games because we needed this energy for sure. It was a great game.”
Despite the loss, Rockland coach Yomary Rodriguez was encouraged by the improvement she saw from her team.
“It was a very good game, we were much more competitive this time around,” Rodriguez said. “I definitely saw the hunger in my girls this game. I’m very proud of them and their heart, especially after our loss on Friday to Seward. I only see great things coming!”
