The Village of Liberty Police Department is proud to share the completion of a meaningful transformation, made possible through a beautification grant awarded in 2025 by Sullivan 180.
This grant provided the resources to fully transform their building into a more welcoming, safe, and community-focused space. Improvements included a redesigned police department lobby transforming it from a dark, uninviting area into a bright, warm, and inviting public space along with new exterior lighting and a dedicated flagpole light to improve safety and visibility, updated interior and exterior signage, and the addition of a garden and large flowerpots to create a more inviting entrance for residents and visitors.
Community partnership was at the heart of this project. We were honored to work with Liberty Central School District, where 3rd and 4th grade students helped plant flowers in the new garden spaces, working hand in hand with officers and strengthening positive relationships between students and police. The department is also grateful to local college artist Nora Liddle, whose beautiful mural now adds color, creativity, and meaning to the building—leaving a lasting mark of community pride and youth involvement in a public space.
This project also introduced two meaningful new features in the community garden:
A Little Free Library, installed in partnership with the Liberty Rotary, providing books for all ages and creating a positive, accessible way for families and young people to engage with the police department.
A Little Free Pantry, established through a partnership with Leadership Sullivan and the generous support of the Liberty PBA, offering nonperishable food items to community members in need and supported through ongoing donations.
These two boxes, standing side by side, may be small in size, but they have made a powerful impact—creating daily opportunities for connection, support, and community care.
Beyond beautification, this project has strengthened relationships, encouraged positive community interaction, promoted wellness through youth engagement and creative expression, and fostered a stronger sense of pride throughout the Village of Liberty. Programs like the Merchant Discount Program also helped stretch every dollar further, allowing us to maximize the impact of this grant funding while staying within budget.
This beautification project reflects the pride, collaboration, and spirit of the Village of Liberty and its residents, and it will serve as a lasting example of how grant funding can positively impact both a public institution and the broader community.
