A friend told me an inspiring story about a baby fawn left beside her house by his mother. She was concerned since it was quite young, shivering in the cold rain, and she didn’t want her dogs bothering it. Her husband built a little shelter over the fawn because they knew they shouldn’t touch it, and then they left it alone to see what would happen.
That baby just stayed in that spot and didn’t move, as if his mother had told him to wait right there for her to return. He waited for 24 hours, and finally the mom did come back to get him. My friend shared how patient the fawn was to wait. No matter how long he’d have to stay put, he believed that his mother would return for him. He knew he was loved and would not be forgotten.
This story reminds me of a twelve-year-old boy who was left on a street corner in Florida by his mother 65 years ago. She told him to wait for her there, but unlike the mother deer, Bill’s mom never returned. He was patient and believed she would come back for him, but he was still sitting on that corner three days later.
Although it looked like young Bill Wilson was unloved and forgotten by his mother, he was loved and never forgotten by his heavenly Father. God was watching over Bill the whole while he waited, and He would not leave His precious child abandoned.
Thousands of people walked past Bill during those three days, but finally God sent a man to ask if he was okay. It took one person filled with the love of God to change Bill’s life forever. After hearing about his situation, the man got him food, made some calls, and got Bill on a bus headed to a Christian summer camp.
However, it didn’t take Bill long to discover that no one there wanted to be around him because of how badly he looked and smelled. Bill found himself alone at an altar attempting to talk to God. He said, “My mother doesn’t want me. The Christians don’t want me. But if you want me, here I am.” God’s immediate response to Bill was, “YES, I want you.” That was the beginning of his life-long service to his Father to rescue other children.
After college, Pastor Bill Wilson began Metro World Child in Brooklyn, NY in 1980. He has ministered to hundreds of thousands unwanted and unloved children with the love of Jesus for all his years. God showed what He could do through one abandoned kid. This ministry, the world’s largest Sunday School, reaches over 600,000 children every week around the world.
Psalm 27:10 says, “Even if my father and mother abandon me, the Lord will hold me close.” Our heavenly Father loves us with an everlasting love, and has promised to never leave nor forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:8).
No matter what you’ve been through in your life or how many have turned their backs on you, no matter how alone you may be feeling right now, there is a Father who loves you like no other could. We can proclaim with the psalmist, “I waited patiently for the Lord to help me, and He turned to me and heard my cry” (Psalm 40:1). Cry out to God, receive His love, and wait and see what He can do in your life.
