FALLSBURG – We got the win! The energy was up, and even when they got down a little, they didn’t give up,” said Liberty JV Head Coach Owens, who, along with volunteer Erin Alvord, stepped in for girls varsity Head Coach Levar Hamilton. Alvord held back emotions as she expressed pride in the team’s performance.
In a tightly contested battle where the Comets and Redhawks girls’ basketball teams traded the lead in a heated matchup, the Redhawks were able to come out on top to win by a close two-point victory. The energy was palpable in the fourth quarter. Liberty’s Giselle Payton led her team all night, getting to the basket and playing effective defense around the perimeter. Payton finished with 12 points.
With three minutes left on the clock, the Comets took the lead as Jocelyn Smith of Fallsburg stepped up to sink a jumpshot that was just inside the three-point line. After the Redhawks evened the score at 29 all with 1:05 left to play, it looked like the game might go into overtime. But those plans were halted by the Redhawks. With less than a minute remaining, Liberty would cash in on another two points to edge out the Comets on the road. The 31-29 win was extra special for the Redhawks, who were happy to get the “W” for their own seniors.
