W.O. Sturdevant of Livingston Manor has purchased of the W.D. Gallup estate 1,500 cords of hardwood, which he has contracted to deliver at the Emmonsville acid factory next winter.
There are eight presidential tickets in the field. They are the Prohibitionist, National Party-Free Silver, Woman Suffrage, Republican, which nominated William McKinley of Ohio for president, Socialist-Labor, Democratic party which nominated William Jennings Bryan of Nebraska for president, Silverites People’s Party and National Democratic party.
Sullivan County Republicans have nominated George McLaughlin of Monticello for Member of Assembly and George O. Fraser of Monticello county clerk. Alpheus Potts of Jeffersonville was chairman of the county convention.
The Democratic convention to nominate candidates will be held at Monticello, Saturday, October 3rd.
Mrs. Marie Peck died at her home at Youngsville Monday morning.
Jacob Krenrich and Miss Laura Stanton, well-known young people of Liberty, will be united in marriage at the bride’s home, Hotel Stanton, on Wednesday, October 7.
Edward Willetts and Miss Nellie H. Mapledoram of Monticello were married at the bride’s home September 23, by Rev. C. Sager.

The report that George J. Morris of Liberty had been gored nearly to death by a bull turns out to be untrue. He wasn’t gored at all.
Peter J. Klein, who has successfully run the Arlington at Livingston Manor for the past year, has bought the hotel of William M. James of New York for about $11,200.
Youngsville: Ronald, the barber, has sold his house and lot in this village to Julius Seiffert of New York for $1,600.
The Manny Brothers have sold their fine black horse to L.L. Campbell, president of the Clover Farms Dairy Co. of New York, who will have it for a pleasure horse. It will be taken to the city this week.
Edward Homer is tearing down the old Wheeler house and will build a boarding house to accommodate 20 guests.
A syndicate composed of Edward Homer, Harry Patterson and Peter Stoddard have purchased of Peter Beadle for $50 the water right of a spring on the old Richard Beadle place on the east hill across the creek and will lead the water to the village to supply their premises.
H.S. Alison, proprietor of the Sullivan County Democrat at Callicoon for the past several years, this week sold that plant to S.S. Pomeroy of Glens Falls, who will take possession October 1. Mr. Pomeroy is an old newspaper man and has been located in various parts of the state. Mr. Allison, we understand, will go to Virginia for his health.
Mrs. Mary Dewitt, a well-known resident of Jeffersonville for many years, died of paralysis at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George Albee of Susquehanna last Friday morning, aged 80 years and 11 months.
John J. Kohler died of dropsy at his farm on Swiss Hill yesterday morning aged 61 years.

William Becker Jr. of this place, recently admitted to the Navy, has been assigned to the battleship Oklahoma, now at New York harbor.
The First National Bank of Jeffersonville held an adjourned meeting on Friday evening. The milk question was discussed. John F. Neiger was elected temporary chairman and Ed Weber, secretary. After some preliminary discussion, a dairymen’s league was organized and the following officers elected Charles W. Wilfert, president; Edwin Weber, secretary and J. Brown, treasurer.
C.G. Yager, the local Ford agent, has received two carloads of the new models. Mr. Yager has secured an increase in his sales territory and now has the towns of Callicoon, Liberty, Bethel and part of Delaware.
Rev. Franklin H. Neuberger will preach in the Jeffersonville M.E. Church next Sunday morning.
After a two year illness from throat trouble, Frank Keegan Sr., a lifelong resident of Beechwoods, died in his 68th year on the homestead where he was born.
Felix Heinle, aged 92 years, died at his home in Fosterdale, September 22nd. He was born in Trillfingen, Wurtemburg, Germany, and came to New York City in 1894. He married there and soon came to Kenoza Lake.
There is a move on for a high school in Grahamsville. Several hundred dollars have already been subscribed.
Mr. and Mrs. William Zieres, who were married in Utica a month ago, have moved to Callicoon where Mrs. Zieres’ parents formerly resided, she being the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Kaufman, now of Utica.

John Laufersweiler of Monticello, son of Frank Laufersweiler of Jeffersonville, escaped the Florida hurricane with his life, but his new home, just completed at Hialeah, a suburb of Miami, was blown away.
Sullivan County Pomona Grange, held its quarterly meeting at Hortonville last Saturday morning at 10 a.m. and continued till near midnight.
George W. Seibert, for the past ten years employed at the Bennett Bros. Pharmacy in Jeffersonville and at Callicoon, has left the business to enter into the insurance field.
John Dycker, a senior member of the general merchandise firm of B.E. Dycker Co. of Callicoon, celebrated his 86th birthday September 19. Mr. Dycker was at one time Sheriff of Sullivan County. He is still hale and hearty.
A thoughtful husband is one who scatters the Sunday paper in only one room.
Patrick J. Lucas died at his home on Wawanda Hill, Liberty, September 21, aged 48 years.
If the bass singers would all join in the protest, we might get a new national anthem to take the place of “The Star Spangled Banner.”
The Masonic Association of Sullivan County, composed of masters and past masters, met in semi-annual session at the rooms of Delaware Lodge in Callicoon last Saturday night. In the election of officers, J. William Davis of Livingston Manor was chosen president; William Lieb of Jeffersonville, vice-president; and Ralph E. Wright of Livingston Manor, secretary-treas.
Margaret Gaebel, widow of Theophilus Bird, died at her home in this village September 25, aged 74 years.

Fire of undetermined origin destroyed two barns on the farm of Sarah and Henry Hadden at West Bethel Wednesday afternoon. The Hadden home is located on the Cochecton Turnpike about three miles east of Fosterdale.
A son was born at Liberty Hospital Saturday night to Eugene and Mabel Kratz Tremper of White Sulphur Springs.
Carl Heidt of Kenoza Lake has been appointed old age relief investigator for the town of Rockland, Liberty, Neversink, Callicoon, Cochecton, Delaware and Fremont by Mrs. Margaret C. Engert, welfare commissioner.
A meeting will be held at the bowling alley Friday to form a village bowling league.
Milton Frankel has returned to the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor for his second year.
Arthur LeRoy, son of Mrs. Frances and the late William LeRoy, and Miss Angeline Wagner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Wagner, both of Youngsville, were married at St. Joseph’s Seminary in Callicoon, on September 21.
Miss Mabel Becker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Preston Becker of Youngsville, and George VonSohn, a mechanic of Peterson, were married on September 20th.
Miss Edith Schwartz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Schwartz of Jeffersonville, and Henry Schaefer, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Schaefer of North Branch, were married at St. Joseph’s Seminary, Callicoon, on September 21st.

Edith Hazel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Bauernfeind of Callicoon RD 1, became the bride of Marvin A. Eberling, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Eberling of Clifton, N.J., on September 14.
Miss Edna Wilson of Jeffersonville was married to Henry Klein, also of Jeffersonville, on Tuesday afternoon in the manse of the Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. George McMahon, the former Lillian Lauer of Callicoon, was tendered a surprise shower Sunday night by Miss Helen Gabel at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gabel. She received many beautiful gifts.
Martin H. Fick of the Tegeler Agency announced the sale of 21 acres with all buildings from the former Frank Graham farm in Swan Lake, now owned by Sam Tuttle of Ferndale, to John Gnan of the Bronx; the Wm. Parluck farm of 110 acres on Swiss Hill, including all stock and machinery; and to Warren and Alice Hess the property in Delaware of Mrs. Karl Schaefer.
Early Saturday morning August Segar and Robert H. Mann will leave for the Gaspe Peninsula, Quebec, to hunt moose and caribou for a few days.
Miss Agnes Kohler of Roscoe and Cornelius Clager of Lake Worth, Fla., were married at the home of the bride’s sister, Mrs. Donald Albee, in Roscoe, September 14. Leonard Misner has resumed his teaching duties at New Paltz Teachers College.

A surprise party in honor of their 35th wedding anniversary was given to Mr. and Mrs. Harry Layman by their daughters, Helen Layman, Marion Manzolillo and Eleanor Mall, with over 50 people attending.
Edson Tegeler reached another milestone in the growth of his general insurance business with a certificate of incorporation filed recently for the Tegeler Agency, Inc.
Mrs. Gertrude Peshke of Jeffersonville and Mr. Bert Henez of Youngsville were married September 22nd at the Presbyterian Church in Jeffersonville.
Kenneth C. Fuller, guidance director of J-YCS reports that 66 percent of the class of 1956 have gone on to higher education.
September 18th was a red-letter day in the history of the Sullivan County Record. On that day four of the Luchs boys came back for a reunion at the printing shop where three of them had started as apprentices as youths. It was John Luchs who, with Will Lieb, bought the Record in 1891 from Martin Weyrauch. He had started with Weyrauch as an apprentice at the age of 12 and was one of the first linotype operators in this county.

A double funeral service was held at Rasmussen Sons Funeral Home in Narrowsburg on Monday for Mr. and Mrs. George Drollinger Sr. of Cochecton Center, both of whom died during the weekend as a result of injuries in an explosion in a chicken coop on Tuesday, September 13.
Prices at the Victory Markets this week as advertised are: Maxwell House Coffee, 3 lbs., $1.99; rib cut pork loin roasts, 49 cents a lb.; eggplant, 2 lbs. for 25 cents (and green stamps too!).
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Edwards of White Sulphur Springs on Monday evening. This is their third daughter. She was born at Loomis Hospital.
Lt. Shirley M. Whitmore, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Orville H. Whitmore, Callicoon RD 2, has completed the orientation course for U.S. Air Force nurses at Sheppard AFB, Texas. She will be assigned to Hamilton AFB, California.
Louis Mitterwager, 59, of Callicoon, passed away at the Callicoon Hospital Saturday, September 17. He was an Agway truck driver and had a 19-year safe driving record.
A son, Kevin William, was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Brockner Jr. of North Branch; a third son has arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Frisbie of Kenoza Lake, September 17.
They are growing ‘em big in Hortonville. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Rosenberger have a sunflower about 12 feet tall in their front yard.
50 Years Ago - 1976
The Sparrow Bush office of United National Bank was bombed on Monday. According to police the amount of explosive employed, enough to blow open the whole side of the brick bank and hurl the heavy night-deposit box across the room, may have damaged much of the money which was stolen.
A memorial planting of spring flowers in loving memory of Dr. and Mrs. Ralph S. Breakey is planned for Sunday, the 25th of September. The specific location for the planting is not far from the final resting place of the Breakeys.
Fred Doetsch and his wife, Gertrude, of White Sulphur Springs, were killed in a crash involving their station wagon Sunday, September 19, in Greenfield Park. They were struck from behind by a car driven by Renard Wayde, 26, of Queens, who was found unconscious at the scene of the accident. He has been charged with criminal negligence, two counts of homicide and driving while intoxicated. The accident happened at about 4 a.m., and was not discovered until 7 a.m.
Warren K. Miller was presented the apron which symbolizes the office of Deputy Grand Master of the Sullivan District of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of New York by his father, Ernest V. Miller, who had held the same office in 1958 and 1959 and 1960. Mr. Fred Miller is a member of the Callicoon Lodge in Jeffersonville. Warren and Ernest are members of Delaware Lodge 561, in Callicoon.
Georgia C. Karadontes of Jeffersonville and Kevin F. Hart of Liberty were united in marriage at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Assumption in Jeffersonville on September 12.
Wendy Sue Cortese of Narrowsburg and Gerald Samson of Lake Ariel, Pa., were married on September 11.
Norma Jean Hull of Downsville and Kevin T. Coll of Buck Brook were married on August 7.
Susan Rampe of Callicoon and Deanna Olsen of Hortonville have received scholarships of $100 each to further their education as Licensed Practical Nurses made possible through the Nursing Fund of Community General Hospital, Grover M. Hermann Division, Callicoon.
40 Years Ago - 1986
A fire, believed to have started with a restaurant deep fryer, forced two elderly women and a gentleman from their apartments over the Pop-ins Restaurant in South Fallsburg on Wednesday afternoon. The fire in the near 70-year-old Roth building gutted the interior of the restaurant on the first floor and destroyed two apartments on the second floor.
Mayor Louis Harmin of Monticello has announced that there will be a Halloween Parade in that village this year. Because of a serious injury involving a 12-year-old Monticello girl who was struck in the left eye by a .38 millimeter steel ball fired from a slingshot during last year’s parade, there was a serious consideration as to holding the traditional parade but many residents expressed concern over the loss of the event.
Cablevision Industries, Inc. of Liberty has completed the purchase of four Tribune Company cable-TV systems for $53 million. The Tribune Company has its headquarters in Chicago. The purchase will bring the total number of Cablevision subscribers now to approximately 400,000 nationwide.
30 Years Ago - 1996
The Town of Rockland had decided to move towards instituting a curfew law.
Mathias Southwick, a 15-year-old from Lancaster County, Pa. visiting in the area, dove into the swift current of the Delaware River and rescued Callicoon resident Miche Hueschen late Friday afternoon. Mathias and his sister, Joy, along with Julie and Matthew Hoffman of Callicoon had called for help when they spotted Hueschen slip and go underwater.
Gary Nichols will bring his brand of retro-country and rockabilly music to Home at Roy’s Restaurant in Fosterdale Saturday.
Dorothy B. Gabriel, 92, of Kenoza Lake, a homemaker and a lifelong area resident, died Monday, September 23, 1996 at Community General Hospital in Harris. The daughter of Harry and Laura Pinney Burr, she was born June 11, 1904 in Bethel.
Laurie Anne Davis and Paul Eugene Bunning were married July 20, 1996, at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Woodbourne. Father John Maher officiated. The bride is the daughter of Owen and Shirley Davis of Grahamsville. The bridegroom is the son of John and Carole Bunning of Hampton Bays.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gibson of White Sulphur Springs are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Renee Ann Gibson, to David Allen Hook. David is the son of Frank Hook of Malone, NY, and Linda Goetz of Inglis, Fla.

The Sullivan County legislature approved $5.6 million to close area #1 of the landfill on Thursday in the full meeting of the legislative body.
Hinrich Luetje and wife Traute and their family have been involved in the Von Steuben Day Parade since its beginning, and this year Luetje not only participated by making one or two floats, but three floats.
DEATHS: Henrietta Eronimous of Swan Lake died September 21, 2006 at the age of 94. Ethel Gibson Dobbs, a lifelong resident of South Fallsburg, died September 23, 2006 at age 94. Arthur Hillriegel of Callicoon died September 25, 2006 at the age of 95.
New York State policeman Matt Johnstone and his K-9 partner “J.T.” were honored by the Sullivan County Community College board of trustees for “outstanding public service to the community and to the college.” Trooper Johnstone is an alumnus of SCCC.
10 Years Ago - 2016
For the fourth straight year, local youth Emily and Alora Carey have done an exemplary job representing Sullivan County 4-H at the New York State Fair in Syracuse. With well over 30 riders in each class, both girls brought home 20 top ribbons, including two wins and a second in very competitive classes in the English, Western and Gymkhana divisions. Both Emily and Alora also were on the State winning FFA Senior and Junior Horse Judging teams. The Carey’s are members of the 4-H Fetlocks and Tri-Valley FFA.
The historical Cochecton Train Station was alive with chattering and curiosity as people piled in for the Cochecton Preservation Society’s (CPS) 10th Annual Coffee, Tea and History event Sunday afternoon. CPS member Jerold Yavarkovsky opened the afternoon giving everyone a short rundown of how we are all cousins in some way or another before introducing five guest speak- ers who were there to share their families’ history and settlement in the area. Anne Pierce, Ron Nearing, Alice Scott, Debbie Bennedum and Edna Calkin all shared interesting bits and pieces of their families’ history.
