There is a special type of person whose dedication for their nation knows no bounds. These protectors of our society, better known as Veterans of the United States Military, give their time, their energy, their allegiance – and sometimes their lives – to the idea of unshakable freedom for all. Truly a special quality exemplified to the highest degree.
Throughout U.S. history, they have participated in wars both on our homeland and overseas, thus shaping American values, and fulfilling the necessary role of service to our nation. They are, in the truest sense of the word, heroes. This Veteran’s Day, we offer our gratitude to the men and women who have worn the uniform of our military branches and earned the title veteran.
If you are looking to gather to honor these heroes, please consider attending one of the events listed on pages 5B and 6B.
And while you are at it, please take the time to look at the pictures and read the inscriptions of the dozens of local veterans in our Special Veterans Section (1-6B) who have served our country.
Whether in war or peace, our nation’s military stands ready to defend our nation and also keep peace around the world, protecting countries who cannot defend themselves while protecting the causes of democracy and freedom.
Sullivan County is truly blessed to have had so many men and women who have joined the military. There have been many who have had long and illustrious careers serving our nation and several, unfortunately, who have died in the line of duty.
Many residents have also attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, the world’s preeminent leader development institution. Members of the Long Gray Line live by the motto “Duty, Honor, Country” and serve as leaders both in and out of uniform.
If you see a veteran at a local service or on the street please give them a salute and word of thanks for all they have done.
Too often, our veterans are taken for granted and too often not given the praise they so richly deserve.
And this quote, taken from a Veterans Day ceremony in 2012 in Washington, D.C., seems to sum it up best, “This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave.”
God bless our veterans.
