The last few days have been very hazy as smoke from Canadian wildfires drift in our direction. Makes you realize that Mother Nature doesn’t care about the borders that man has created; we’re all on the same planet and are truly at the mercy of the aforementioned Mother.
And then we have the occasional earthquake, a few downpours with flash flooding, and some high wind advisories. In the end, Nature reminds us that our human powers are quite limited.
Little Mary Sunshine here, giving you the latest news on the state of the world. There has been a lot of hot air coming from the Washington, DC area, and it has been raining a world of hurt on the very people it is supposed to protect. There have also been lots of tempests all over the country as masked lightning strikes attack random people on the streets – and in Home Depot parking lots – and like a tornado, lifts them up and sends them to places unknown. Talk about scary times!
I don’t know about you, but I much prefer the days of yore, say the good old 2009-2017, when the most outrageous thing we had to worry about were mustard on hamburgers and chief executives wearing brown suits on the job. Ah, those were simpler times, weren’t they?
We didn’t have to worry about the cost of eggs or losing health insurance or Social Security or Medicare or Medicaid. We didn’t have to worry about billionaires gutting our national government or cutting off funding for scientific research, vaccines, and college grants. All those things that made America truly exceptional.
But here we are, smack in the middle of a red-hatted hurricane that threatens to leave us in a much more isolated and less influential place than we started. Entire structures that were created over time with thought and good intentions have been destroyed in the blink of an eye. Longtime relationships with allies have been upended with little thought for the future.
This hurricane is not going to make anything great. This storm will destroy all in its path – indeed it already has – and leave us poorer and weaker for it.
As Bob Dylan once sang, “You don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.”
