LAKE HUNTINGTON – Students enrolled in Mr. Billard’s Carpentry classes at Sullivan West recently completed the construction of an 8x10 shed, showcasing applied learning through hands-on instruction and collaborative project work.
Two separate carpentry classes worked together on the same structure, guiding students through each stage of the building process. Instruction focused on understanding and applying essential structural systems, including foundations, decks, wall framing, and roof construction. Students learned how to properly measure, layout, cut, and attach each component to ensure overall strength, stability, and durability.
To reinforce these concepts, each student also created a scaled model replica of the shed. This exercise strengthened their understanding of how individual systems integrate into a complete structure. As a capstone component of the course, students will develop a PowerPoint presentation using photographs taken throughout the construction process to document the progression of the project and reflect on their learning. “This project allowed students to apply classroom instruction in a meaningful, real-world context,” said Mr. Billard. “They gained practical experience while developing planning, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.”
Students pictured include Matt Everett, Kameron Everitt, Noah Golden, Casey Heimowitz, Jayden Sanabria, William Saul, and Carly Scardino. Additional students who contributed to the project include Nicholas Arnold, Tyler Brockner, Zach Ducey, Tristan Howell, Dylan Scardefield, Will Wilson, and Allison Adams.
Sullivan West extends its sincere appreciation to local community members for their generous support in providing materials and equipment necessary to complete this project. These contributions will also support future hands-on learning opportunities for students. The completed structure reflects Sullivan West’s commitment to experiential learning, student engagement, and strong community partnerships.
