The spirit of Woodstock

This past week was the 56th anniversary of the original Woodstock Music and Art Fair, held right here in Bethel. The lasting legacy of this world-famous music festival can still be felt, but we fear its message of “peace and love” is slipping away.

The event held in 1969 was a symbol of peaceful co-existence, bringing together a large crowd of young people who shared a desire for social change and a rejection of war and conflict.

The movement of the 1960’s brought about change and a societal awareness to the impacts of war and other social justice issues such as segregation.

“In that time of conflict and uncertainty, three days of peace and music seemed to be just what a divided nation needed,” writes Bethel Woods, home of the site of Woodstock. “What began on a stage in the middle of a small New York farm field ended on the world stage.”

Today’s Gen Z seem to be making similar strides in bringing about change and awareness on myriad issues to the world’s stage. Regardless of one’s stance on these issues, one can’t deny that the younger generation is motivated and outspoken.

While the message may seem trite, it does feel true that we are more divided than ever. Let the message of Woodstock’s “peace and unity” move into your own life.

Start small–talk with your neighbor; talk with a young person in your life. When you open up dialogue you have the opportunity to broaden your own beliefs and perspectives and make way for more understanding.

Now is a great time to visit the Museum at Bethel Woods. The curated exhibits take a step back in time and allow you to learn more about the decade and its significance, not only on society but also on music.

The “spirit of Woodstock” is a powerful reminder of a time when a generation sought to create a more peaceful, loving and unified world through music, art and a shared experience.
