NARROWSBURG – Delaware Valley Arts Alliance (DVAA) celebrates the start of Fall with two new exhibitions that explore our relationship to the natural world. Steve Deihl works in symbiosis with nature, allowing the elements an equal role in the creation of his work. Heidi Jensen’s work explores our impact on the natural world, specifically through the lens of the logging industry in the 19th and 20th centuries. On view from September 19 – October 25.
Steve Deihl | The Narrowsburg Series, Alliance Gallery, On View: September 19 – October 25. Film Screening & Artist Talk: Saturday, October 24, 1pm. The Narrowsburg Series began with the idea that "landscape" is more than representation; it should capture an exact place and time as a true immersive experience. Steve Deihl’s process be-gins with steel panels, fabricated locally in Sparrow Bush, NY, attached to a large sled and dragged through the woods near his studio in Narrowsburg. The panels are then set horizontally and covered in viscous white oil paint mixed with a slow drying agent that allows the weather, animals, etc. to make their own additions, developing the final image like a long-exposure photograph. The centerpiece of this new exhibition will be Equinox, a new piece which was placed behind the nearby Maison Bergogne (226 Bridge St, Narrowsburg), on the spring equinox and will be ceremoniously conveyed from there to the DVAA at 3:30pm on Saturday, September 19, in time to take its place at the exhibition opening party. The community is encouraged to join the work on this journey. Deihl’s website is sensinggeometry.com/the-narrowsburg-series.
Heidi Jensen | Landlooker Loft Gallery, On View: September 19 – October 25, Artist Talk: Saturday, October 10, 1pm. The centerpiece of Heidi Jensen’s exhibition, Landlooker, is a video featuring her carved wooden puppets performing songs that were written and sung in lumber camps in the 19th and 20th centuries. The audio is taken from field recordings from the 1930s, which are part of the Alan Lomax Collection in the Library of Congress. Jensen explores logging culture, historical processes of extraction, colonization and the aftermath of ecological devastation left in the wake of logging in this era. The video will be accompanied by Jensen’s hand-carved puppets, props and drawn back-drops. Jensen’s website is heidijensen.com.
Opening receptions for both exhibitions will take place on Saturday, September 19 from 4-6pm. DVAA is located at 37 Main Street, Narrowsburg, NY. Walk-ins are welcome, and the galleries are ADA-accessible. For more information, visit delawarevalleyartsalliance.org.
