Van Furman at Nike and Footlocker Nationals

GRAHAMSVILLE – Van Furman, a senior at Tri-Valley High School, has had a historic cross country season, capping it off with unprecedented achievements on both state and national levels. Van not only won the state Class D championship for the second consecutive year but also advanced to two national championships—an accomplishment that places him among an elite group of only eight boys in the United States to qualify for both high school cross country national championships (Nike and Footlocker).

Cross country’s two major national championships are hosted by Nike and Footlocker, showcasing the best high school talent in the country. The Nike Cross Nationals (NXN) took place on December 7th in Portland, Oregon, where Van represented Tri-Valley as the first runner from the school ever to qualify for the event. To secure his spot, he had to advance from one of eight regional qualifiers in the U.S., with the top two teams and top five individuals from each region earning entry.

The conditions at NXN were grueling, with cold rain transforming the course into a mud pit. Runners likened it to skating on ice as many struggled to maintain footing. Despite the challenging environment, Van surged from 100th place at the 1000-meter mark to 41st place by the 2000-meter mark, ultimately finishing 48th out of 199 runners. He was the top finisher from New York and the fifth boy overall from the Northeast region. It was a standout performance on what could be described as a “character day.” While in Portland, Van had the opportunity to meet professional Nike athletes and Olympians, including Cole Hocker, the 2024 Paris 1500m gold medalist.

The second national championship, the Footlocker Nationals Cross Country Championship presented by Hoka, took place in San Diego, California on December 14th. Footlocker Nationals is the oldest and most prestigious of the cross country national championships and holds special significance for Furman’s family. His father, Chip Furman, also advanced to Footlocker Nationals in 1990 for Tri-Valley, where he placed sixth overall.

To qualify for Footlocker Nationals, Van Furman finished sixth at the Northeast Regional meet in Boston on November 30, 2024. In San Diego, the weather proved to be much more favorable, with sunny skies and ideal conditions. Although he was projected to finish 35th by Tullyrunners, a running analysis website, Furman exceeded expectations by placing 27th out of 40 runners, earning Honorable Mention All-American honors. The night before the race, Furman and his fellow competitors were shown motivational videos, including messages of encouragement from Tri-Valley teammates, teachers, and family members.

Van’s senior season has been nothing short of historic. Alongside his state championship and national appearances, he signed a letter of commitment to run at Georgetown University on a full athletic scholarship. As he transitions to indoor track and field, there is little doubt that Van will continue to break records and inspire his community.

The next chapter of  Van’s journey promises more milestones, but for now, Tri-Valley celebrates its star athlete and the remarkable legacy he has built.”
