Exhibit explores democratic ideals

YOUNGSVILLE — On Saturday afternoon, Domesticities on Route 52 was the scene of the opening reception of FOUR/FOR, a unique artists’ exhibit that explores the connection between four artists, and their art as an expression of democratic principles. It was hosted by the Sullivan County Democratic Committee.

Gail Tuchman, photographer; Alexis Siroc, painter; Miriam Hernandez, painter; and Marjorie Morrow, painter, were on hand to share the inspirations behind their pieces on display.

Tuchman explained, “For this exhibit, I’ve selected moments of natural beauty – as a reminder of what’s precious and to underscore the need for us to demand and support all initiatives that protect our environment.”

Soric, who also finds inspiration in nature, calls her creations abstract botanicals. Using an eco printing process she developed, she uses natural dyes in combination with drawing to produce her art prints.

Marjorie Morrow shared her process for combining man-made fabric and natural textures to represent tension, “a metaphor for our current situation.”

Hernandez described her artwork as representing ethics, a core democratic principle, that we should be helping others, not just ourselves.

“We should ask ourselves ‘how does what we do help others?’” she said, adding that works often provide inspiration by showing something beautiful or not beautiful to draw attention to some condition that needs to be addressed.

The 90-plus attendees heard brief statements by Democratic candidates during the gathering. In addition to their get out the vote messages, Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther, State Senate candidate Eric Ball, candidate for 101 District NYS Assembly Matthew Mackey, and Congressional candidate (District 19) Josh Riley spent time interacting with attendees and answering questions about their candidacies.

Refreshments were provided by the Sullivan County Democratic Committee volunteers. The FOUR/FOR exhibit will be at Domesticities until Friday, September 30 and is available for viewing during store hours.
