surge of record-challenging heat across much of the Northeast will soon ease as rounds of heavy rainfall return to parts of the region this Friday, increasing the risk of dangerous and disruptive flash flooding.

With high temperatures occurring this summer, it’s important to know how to stay safe in this extreme weather.

Simply relying on the thermometer isn’t enough to assess the danger of summer heat. The heat index, which combines temperature and humidity, provides a more accurate picture.

“It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity”. That’s a partly valid phrase you may have heard in the summer, but it’s actually both.

The National Weather Service issues alerts when dangerous heat conditions are expected, including a “heat advisory,” “excessive heat watch,” and “excessive heat warning.”

Here are some tips for staying safe in the heat:

Hydrate: Drink plenty of fluids, even if you don’t feel thirsty, but avoid alcohol and excessive sugar.

Stay Cool: Seek air-conditioned environments, take cool showers or baths, and wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.

Limit Outdoor Activity: Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day and seek shade when outdoors.

Never Leave Anyone in a Hot Car: This applies to children, pets, and even vulnerable adults.

Check on Others: Especially check on elderly, sick, or frail individuals, and those living alone.

Sullivan County Department of Public Health offers cooling stations. Locations include: Livingston Manor Library, Mamakating Library, Sunshine Hall Free Library, Jeffersonville Library, Liberty Public Library, Daniel Pierce Library, Fallsburg Library, Ethelbert B. Crawford Library and the Callicoon Library.
