BETHEL — The Town of Bethel has received a $101,000 state grant to replace its municipal dog kennel with a new facility designed to meet updated animal shelter standards.
Supervisor Daniel Sturm said the grant was awarded through the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets’ Companion Animal Capital Projects Fund Program. The town will provide a 10 percent local match, bringing the total project cost to roughly $112,000.
Sturm said the town’s existing kennel had passed required inspections for years, but no longer meets newer standards recently implemented for municipal animal shelters.
“These funds will allow us to replace the aged shelter with a brand new modernized facility designed to meet current standards and serve our community well into the future,” Sturm said.
The project is expected to include demolition of the existing kennel and construction of a new facility. Town officials said they expect the work could be completed within three to four months.
