Bethel upgrades constabulary equipment

BETHEL — The Bethel Town Board approved several equipment upgrades for the town constabulary during its May 27 meeting, including computers for two constable vehicles and new bulletproof vests for officers.

The board approved spending $13,345 for computers to be installed in two constable vehicles: a Ford Taurus and a new Chevy Blazer. Supervisor Daniel Sturm said the equipment is part of the town’s continued effort to upgrade its police equipment and staffing.

The town also received approval for a federal Patrick Leahy Bulletproof Vest Partnership grant. Sturm said the vests will cost about $7,000, with the town paying half and receiving reimbursement for the other half.

Grant writer Moreen Lerner said Bethel’s policy mirrors state policy, requiring officers to wear the vests except during administrative duty, medical exemptions or extreme heat.

Sturm said the vests are important because police work can expose officers to unpredictable and dangerous situations.
