Kicking off day two of the BCANY vs Cancer Classic were Sullivan West and Manor/Roscoe.
The first quarter opened up with explosive and intense play by both teams. Each time one team scored the opposite team wasn’t far behind. By the four-minute mark it was 7-6 in favor of the Bulldogs. Brandon Haass of Sullivan West was able to fight his way to an inside the paint layup to make it 9-6, with just two minutes left in the quarter Kaleb Maldonado of the Wildcats responded with a deep three to tie the score at 9-9.
With a combination of inside the paint play and hitting deep shots Manor was able to take a 14-13 lead over Sullivan West in the final seconds. Ben Johnston of the Wildcats even knocked down a buzzer beating three pointer to punctuate the end of the quarter.
Superb passing from Sullivan West started the second quarter. After a short back and forth foul shot battle the score was 20-19 with Manor now holding the slight lead. Sullivan West’s passing allowed them to open up the court for easy shots but Manor responded with aggressive defense that led to more scoring opportunities.
The second quarter ended with Sullivan West up 33-24 with a lot of basketball left to play.
After the half, Manor’s Kaleb Maldonado was the first to break the ice with a drive from the top of the key into a floater. By the four-minute mark Sullivan West had begun to pull away for the first time with a 13-point lead. The Wildcats had multiple turnovers and Sullivan West capitalized on their errors creating multiple three point shot opportunities for the Bulldogs. Sullivan West was up 50-35 to end the third quarter.
Manor’s Josh Hendrickson was the first to score in the final quarter with a quick open layup after a beautiful pass from Kaleb Maldonado. After a sequence of multiple steals into baskets, Manor was able to go on a 6 point run to bring the score to 50-41.
Manor was able to hold the Bulldogs scoreless to start the final eight minutes, but they were unable to overcome the lead Sullivan West had built. The Bulldogs would close it out with a final score 59-47 over the Wildcats.
Coach Ronj Padu of Sullivan West said after the win, “It’s always fun to play in this tournament and I think the boys came out pretty well for such an early game. We settled in for the second half and played some good basketball.”

“We played well defensively and rebounded well. It’s always a great day for a great cause and I’m proud of the girls today,” said head coach of Sullivan West, Pat Donovan, on their win over Manor at the BCANY vs Cancer Classic matchup.
Sullivan West started the game with a full-court press that allowed them to force multiple early turnovers. But both teams were struggling to find the basket early on. With four minutes left in the first quarter, Sullivan West was up 4-1 over the Lady Wildcats. Anastasia Niforatos of Manor was able to score a layup off a rebound to make the score 4-3 and Ella Herbert of Sullivan West was able to score as well in response.
The first quarter ended with the Lady Bulldogs up 10-6 over Livingston Manor.
The second quarter was a defensive battle with both teams forcing multiple turnovers. It was a slow eight minutes offensively with both squads only scoring eight points combined. At the hal,f the score was 15-9 with the Lady Bulldogs still holding on to the lead.
Coming out of halftime, both teams were slow to score offensively until Sullivan West’s Roz Passante was sent to the foul line. Manor immediately responded with Grace Darder sinking two foul shots of her own to make the score 16-11. Brooke Nunnari of the Lady Bulldogs was able to convert a drive into a three-point play, drawing the foul. Manor was down 22-14 behind Sullivan West heading into the fourth.
In the final quarter both teams struggled at the free throw line. Sullivan West’s Ella Herbert kicked it into high gear on offense and was able to score twice off floaters. Sullivan West led Manor by 10 points with five minutes left in the game. They were slowly trying to pull away and finish off with the win. A deep three from Herbert put the Bulldogs up 17 over Manor.
The Lady Wildcats would put up five more points in the quarter but ultimately came up short. The final score was 33-21 with a win for the Sullivan West Lady Bulldogs.
