LAKE HUNTINGTON – As fall sports contests begin for another season the Sullivan West Bulldogs volleyball team steps back onto their home court for their second game of the season. The Burke Eagles took advantage of a slow start to the Bulldogs offense taking the first set 25-13. In the second set the Bulldogs rallied together for a more competitve and cohesive matchup capitalizing on the Eagles’ errors.
But not to be edged out on the road, the Eagles secured a 25-18 second set victory in a much closer back-and-forth duel. The final set of the game showed the Bulldogs fight back at every volley forcing timeouts for the visiting team. At 17-16 the ‘dogs had taken their first lead of the game.
The Eagles quickly put a damper on that momentum to swing the lead back in their favor. At 23 all the game was on the line for the Bulldogs. In the final minutes of the game Burke took control to close out the highly competitive final set 25-23.
“While the result wasn’t what we were hoping for, we are proud of how we played. Our fundamentals are strong which gives us a solid foundation to build upon. We’ll learn from this and come back stronger,” shared this season’s new varsity coach Jenna Vairo of Sullivan West. Vairo served previously as assistant coach under Helene Chappell.
