George Edward “Butch” Gregory of Monticello passed away on Wednesday, December 6, 2023 at the Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx after succumbing to an illness. He was 78.

The son of the late George S. Gregory and Mildred Richardson Gregory, he was born October 22, 1945 in Monticello.

Butch was a veteran of the United States Army serving from 1964 to 1966. He worked in the sewer department for the Village of Monticello for many years before retiring. He was a lifelong member of the Monticello Fire Dept. serving as Chief from 1977 to 1978; and was also a former secretary for the Dept. and a member of the Monticello Exempt Firemen’s Association. He loved spending many hours flipping chickens for Mr. Willy’s Catering. Butch was also an avid hunter and was a former member of Boys of Birch Hunting Camp and a current member of the Mahogany Ridge Hunting Club. He also loved animals and had a famous special bond with Honey, a whitetail deer that hung out on his property.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years: Joan McKenzie Gregory, at home; a son: Brian Gregory and his wife Patty of Lubbock, TX; a daughter: Debbie Mitchell and her husband Jody of Rock Hill; four grandchildren: Christopher Gregory, Michael Gregory, Becky Mitchell and Mackenzie McCreery (Kyle); an uncle: Richard Gregory and his wife Jane; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, Butch was predeceased by a sister: Patricia Washington Jackson.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 12 from 4:00 to 7:00pm at the Monticello Fire House, 23 Richardson Avenue in Monticello. His funeral services will start at 7pm which will include Firematic services and military honors. Cremation will follow the services.
