Callicoon reorganizes

Taxpayers and business owners are top priority

CALLICOON – On Monday, January 12, the Town of Callicoon held its annual reorganizational meeting during which they announced their monthly meeting time, made official appointments, and swore in Supervisor Tom Bose, Highway Superintendent Ryan Bose, and Councilmen Charles Schadt and Scott Gaebel.

The board announced that monthly meetings will continue to be the second Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at 19 Legion St, Jeffersonville. They also announced that the official newspapers will be the Democrat and The River Reporter.

Looking ahead to 2026, Supervisor Bose hopes to complete a few projects that would benefit the efficiency of the highway department and give residents a place to stroll, all while being fiscally responsible.

“We’ve always had the goals of proper management of public funds, looking out for our taxpayers, trying to do good things,” Bose said. “We’re going to be looking into new storage space at the town highway facility so we get more of our equipment and trucks under cover.”

Bose noted that the board kept the town tax levy at a negative increase last year and that he always keeps local business owners in mind when making decisions.

He mentioned completed projects from last year, including the replacement of the 60-year-old water tank in the Youngsville Water District, and rebuilding the basketball court at the town park, while adding pickleball courts and improving the area’s drainage.

Within the next two months, Bose said he would like to see a similar facelift for the recreation area right across the street from the Town Hall.

“The old Lions Field is still owned by Sullivan West Central School District, but we talked to [Superintendent] Kathleen Bressler and Village Mayor [William] Chellis. There’s some grant money available there… I would like to see a similar project and a little more done over here, the basketball court needs a complete makeover, hopefully adding pickleball to that,” he said.

Bose added that if space allowed it, he would like to install a walking/running track around the perimeter of Lions Field.

“When you see the amount of people that walk or run on these roads – it’s not safe,” he said. “If we could provide an area for people who like to walk or run… But it would be a project that would have to be applied for by the school district because they are the owners of the property. But being that it’s within the Village of Jeffersonville, which is within the Town of Callicoon, if all three of us make the application, nothing is guaranteed, but it would be a very strong application.”
