Monticello looks into EV station expansion

MONTICELLO — Discussing the opportunity for the expansion of electric vehicle charging stations for the Village was Andy Kambourelis of Genesis LED, who noted that the project is currently preliminary as the Board is yet to uncover the potential net cost.

“What I need to do is we need to find out where you would place them - the right locations - and then develop a real proposal based on each location and break it down exactly and be very specific,” Kambourelis said.

He stated that his goal was to bring the Level 2 Charging stations to different areas so people could charge their cars.

Village Attorney Michael Sussman inquired the criteria of sites, exampling the Government Center where it sees a lot of cars and employee traffic.

“One assumes that some portion of those individuals may in the next two or three years have electric vehicles,” explained Sussman.

Kambourelis detailed that one is looking for traffic, parking spaces, and that “future opportunity for people as they transition to electric”.

“We have to look at how many spots are available, how many are handicap,” stated Kambourelis. “We look for convenience too for where’s the power coming from and where’s the path of least resistance to get you the power.”

The Town of Fallsburg was exampled as being in the application process, highlighting that every place that was picked for Fallsburg was stated to be accessible by the public. Some of these places were the senior center, the Town Hall and on Main Street.

Village Manager James Snowden inquired about the requirement for getting meters to places like Broadway and getting electric to the meter at the charging station.

Kambourelis suggested that the process could involve “cutting, trenching, maybe horizontal boaring.”

“If it gets to that point we’ll do a field trip and we’ll go look at these sites...[and go from there].”

Sussman suggested that the Board might want to produce five or six different sites [for options], based on the information provided.

“You can then go out with this team and make an assessment and feasibility of the different options,” suggested Sussman.

Hutchins agreed.

“It’s definitely the future, I mean we definitely gotta do a little bit, I think so.”
