Community invited to discover benefits of shopping at Farmers’ Markets

During National Farmers’ Market Week, August 1st-7th

LIBERTY –The Sullivan Catskills Farmers’ Markets collective is inviting the community to join in the celebration of farmers’ markets during National Farmers’ Market Week, August 1st through the 7th. For National Farmers’ Market week, many of the markets will have a special activity or event scheduled like live music or tasting demos.

“Everybody wins at the farmers’ market, and we have data to back it up. Nine in ten of 398 Catskills shoppers surveyed believe local farmers’ market food tastes more flavorful and fresher, and 94 percent even think a trip to the market makes it easier to eat healthy. Our farmers win too, with studies showing that they earn over 90 cents per dollar when they sell at farmers’ markets, as opposed to just 17 cents when selling to grocery stores,” said Melinda Meddaugh, Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County Agriculture and Food Systems Issue Leader.

“When the Sullivan Catskills Farmers’ Markets say ‘everybody,’” they mean it,” affirmed Sullivan County Public Health Director Nancy McGraw. “Those who receive SNAP, WIC, senior, and veteran benefits all are incentivized to shop local at the markets. WIC mothers and seniors over 60 that meet basic qualifications are able to receive $20 in farmers’ market checks, free through the Farmers’ Market Nutrition Coupon (FMNP) program. In fact, SNAP/EBT recipients are given $14 free for every $10 they spend in benefits at the farmers markets.

If you haven’t yet visited a local farmers’ market, Farmers’ Market Week is the perfect opportunity to experience today’s farmers’ market: it’s fun, socially fulfilling, and a great way for the entire family to eat healthier and support our neighbors – hard-working Catskills farmers!
