SULLIVAN COUNTY – The quarterly sales tax report released on October 28 by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli found that local government sales tax collections across the state totaled $19.6 billion from January through September 2026. This represents a statewide increase in collected sales tax of 7.6%, or $1.4 billion. While eight counties saw double-digit growth in this year’s sales tax year-over-year, Sullivan County bucked the trend with a 1.9% decrease.
“All regions of the state had year-over-year sales tax collection increases,” said DiNapoli. “But higher costs are forcing many families to stretch their household budgets, which could in turn reduce consumer spending. Given this risk, local governments should temper their expectations for sales tax revenue growth.”
The comptroller’s report found that Wayne County saw the highest growth with a 16.3% increase, followed by Montgomery County with 15.3% increase. While all of the 10 regions of the state showed an increase in sales tax revenue, New York City ranked the highest with an increase of 8.5%, or $693 million.
