County DPW Commissioner hints at weight limit on Wurtsboro Mtn. Road

WURTSBORO — After an introduction by Town of Mamakating Supervisor Michael Robbins, Sullivan County DPW Commissioner Ed McAndrew provided an update on a long-discussed traffic concern: heavy vehicle restrictions along Wurtsboro Mountain Road.

McAndrew explained that he had been approached by officials from both the Village of Wurtsboro and the Town of Mamakating about limiting the weight of vehicles traveling down County Route 172.

“We’ve looked at it in a bunch of different ways,” McAndrew said. “In compliance with the State, we determined that the best approach is to match the Village’s existing 10-ton weight limit. There’s currently no way for trucks to safely navigate the area once they reach the end of County Route 172.”

To address this, McAndrew issued a formal Notice of Order. It outlines a new 10-ton weight restriction that will apply from County Route 166A, continuing along Route 172 to the Village line. Appropriate signage will be installed to enforce the limit.

The announcement was met with applause from the audience and members of the Mamakating Town Board.

Councilman Jim Post expressed appreciation for McAndrew’s efforts and the county’s involvement.

“We’re going to let Commissioner McAndrew do roads — that’s what he does,” Post said. “This is a pretty big deal.”

Supervisor Robbins echoed the sentiment and thanked County Legislators Terry Blosser-Bernardo and Nick Salomone Jr., along with the Village of Wurtsboro, for their leadership in making the change happen.

Robbins talks town happenings

As part of his Supervisor’s Report, Robbins stated that he has “got everything in the works” for the upcoming Fireworks Display happening on July 12.

After the Wurtsboro Street Fair, this will take place at the Wurtsboro Airport.

In addition, there will also be a drone show as part of the Fireworks event.

He also stated that on May 24, the Stanton Cemetary will hold the unveiling of the Pomeroy Patriot Burial Marker.

“Our [Town] Historian Virdanna [Lawrence] got this Pomeroy Historical Marker for the Cemetary,” stated Robbins. “It’s to honor a member. The Bloomingburg Restoration Foundation also helped out to get this going. It’s a big event for Mamakating and their history.”
