If you ask any number of school children what their favorite time of year is, it is most likely not the end of summer. The annual era of waking up before the Sun to sit by the curbside waiting for the bus, joined by the ever-cherished first day of school, is a stressful and anxious time for the children of the area.

However, before the classrooms are filled with young minds eager to learn and football fields are packed for Friday Night Lights, there’s still a small squeeze of summer left. The days will remain warm and the river will keep attracting visitors until it freezes over (which certainly won’t be by next week.) Just because class is in session doesn’t mean the fun has to end.

Of the eight public schools that encompass the county, hundreds of children pursue extracurricular passions in addition to their education. Our students are blessed to have access to such prosperous sports teams, esports, athletics and other mental gymnastic activities that allow our youngest to grow into their full potential in all sorts of ways.

To those elected to the various school boards who will help shape the future of their school district for the upcoming year, be fair, be wise, and be true to the students relying on your leadership.

To those returning to school, remember to be diligent in your studies and cultivate a work ethic that will see you past high school in not only higher education (if you should chose to pursue that path) but in the working world as well. As the future generation, we are relying on you to pick up the torch when it is passed to you.

But even with all of the seriousness, remember to have fun as well. You are only ever in grade school, middle and high school once in your lives – so enjoy the ride! Go to football games, take that extra curricular that makes you smile, spend time with your friends and family, give your favorite teacher that big red apple. Ask your elders and they will tell you that all of that disperses without a second notice.

Good luck with the new school year! The community is standing with you in anticipation for the great things that will come out of this year for you.
