SULLIVAN COUNTY- The National Weather Service issued an Extreme Heat Warning for much of New York State, including Sullivan County, from 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, until 8 p.m. on Friday, July 3. Temperatures are set to soar as high as 99 degrees, with a heat index high of 106 degrees, on Thursday, July 2, as county officials issue a heat warning for residents.
“Take extra precautions when outside,” read Sullivan County Government’s Facebook post on Tuesday, June 30. “Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Do not hesitate to call 911 if need be. Stay cool, stay hydrated, stay informed!”
The county’s post lists several places, including Callicoon Library, Monticello Library, and the Sullivan County Government Center, that are stepping in to act as cooling centers in this time of extreme heat.
Older residents must be extremely careful during heat waves according to the AARP, formerly known as the American Association of Retired Persons, which issued a press release on Wednesday, July 1, warning older New Yorkers about this week’s dangerous heat.
“Extreme heat can be life-threatening for older New Yorkers,” said Beth Finkel, State Director of AARP New York. “As temperatures rise this week, we encourage everyone to stay hydrated, spend time in air-conditioned spaces, and check on older family members, friends, and neighbors. A simple phone call or visit could save a life
