Golden Latte

Around this time of year especially, the idea of wellness is always on my mind. It is really important to balance health in your lifestyle whether it be fitness, foods, self-care or all of the above. That is why I have teamed up with Sullivan 180, whose mission it is to help get the community on a healthy lifestyle track. It is still an adjustment for me at times, since I love my chips and dips… but making small changes in your day-to-day lifestyle can have a huge impact. Sullivan 180 will provide a recipe at the beginning of each month, beginning with The Golden Latte.

The Golden Latte is a fan favorite in the Sullivan 180 office. Turmeric has many health benefits. It’s an immune booster, helps heal gut health, supports brain health, is an anti-inflammatory and so much more. In addition to the health benefits, turmeric, in Golden Latte form, tastes delicious. It is a healthy dessert alternative and a great drink to help unwind and relax at the end of the day.

yields: 1

Ingredients

1 cup milk, unsweetened almond milk, oat milk (or your preferred milk alternative).

1 teaspoon honey (up to 1 tablespoon or more, to taste) (can sub pure maple syrup for vegan version)

1/4 teaspoon ground turmeric

1/4 teaspoon ground ginger (can sub 1-2 teaspoons fresh grated ginger, to taste)

1 5-inch cinnamon stick (can sub 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon)

1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon coconut oil (optional*)

Pinch freshly ground black pepper

Optional additions – add with the other spices at the beginning of the process.

1/2 vanilla bean (seeds scraped and entire bean added)

2-3 cardamom pods (crushed)

Pinch ground cayenne pepper

Pinch freshly ground nutmeg

Black peppercorns

Set a small saucepan over low heat. Add the milk/milk alternative, 1 teaspoon honey, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon stick, and black pepper, and stir with a whisk until combined.

Bring to steaming, just below a simmer. Do not let it come to a boil. Keep just below a simmer, occasionally stirring, for 10 minutes.

Remove from heat. Remove the cinnamon stick. If you added other spices that need to be strained out, strain using a fine mesh strainer, then return to the pan. Stir in the vanilla and coconut oil (if using). Taste and add additional honey if desired.

Use a frother or whisk to froth the tea, if desired. Pour into a mug and spoon the froth over the top. Serve.
