Got your back (pack)

It was only just a few short weeks ago that thousands of Sullivan County students began their well deserved rest period from their studies and sports, but August has returned once more, heralding the ever-ticking countdown for the upcoming first day of school.

It is a time of mixed emotions for our studious youth. The looming end of the season brings a sense of dread, but also vivid excitement for what is shortly to come. With all of that right around the corner, it is time to start thinking about back to school supplies and other necessary items, like backpacks. And as the lists grow longer and longer every year, budgets get thinner and thinner.

However, thanks to the return of the Backpacks for Hope drive put on by the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Town of Wallkill Inc., parents of Sullivan and Orange counties don’t need to worry about those essential pieces of equipment. Last year, the organization filled more than 230 backpacks with supplies and this year they are aiming even higher.

Applications will be accepted until this Friday, August 2, on a first-come, first-serve basis, so be sure to act fast. Both member and non-member applications can be found at www.bgcorange.org/news-events/backpacks-for-hope.html. Interested parents and guardians can apply by emailing office@bgcorange.org or faxing (845) 342-8836.

If you are interested in donating, there are five host sites where bags are being collected in Sullivan County. Those are Jeff Bank: 19 Church Street, Liberty, Misner Agency: 489 State Route 52, Woodbourne, Resorts World Catskills: 888 Resorts World Drive, Monticello, River Reporter: 93 Erie Avenue, Narrowsburg and the Sullivan Catskills Visitors Association: 15 Sullivan Avenue, Suite 1, Liberty.

Starting up again is a major cause of worry for all ages but with the generosity of so many across both counties with the best interest of our scholars in mind, countless students (and their parents) can shake off the stress of starting the new year!
