Guided History and Fall Foliage Hike in Liberty

Posted

LIBERTY – Sunday, October 20, at 4:00 pm, the public is invited to join a Guided History and Fall Foliage Hike at Walnut Mountain Park in Liberty, NY. This will be a 60-minute (approx. 1 mile) round-trip walk along wide, gentle uphill carriage trails. The trip leaders are volunteers Lisa Lyons and Ruth Huggler, with James Guara of Liberty Parks & Recreation.

Huggler and Lyons are working with the Town of Liberty on a project to add several interpretive panels about this part of Liberty history at Walnut Mountain Park.

The hike will be a trip back in time to 1886-87 when the Walnut Mountain House was built at the summit of the mountain while walking to its remaining foundation. It’s a great opportunity to enjoy the fall foliage and stop at the overlook to enjoy the view. Meet at the baseball field parking area, Walnut Mountain Rd (off Rt 55), Liberty. The hike starts promptly at 4:00 pm. Wear sturdy shoes or boots. No dogs on this history hike please.

There is a related event at the Liberty Library – a display with images and details about Walnut Mountain House history on view through Oct. 31.

Register for the hike by October 19th by calling Lisa at Morgan Outdoors (845) 693-4181.  Walnut Mountain is a 265-acre Town Park, with historic carriage trails and recently constructed mountain bike trails adding to Liberty Parks & Recreation’s trail network.
