It seems there are different dictionary definitions of “health”. Miriam Webster defines it as “the condition of being sound in body, mind, or spirit” while the World Health Organization calls it “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

Sullivan County has long dealt with low markers of health based on quality of life and health infrastructure.

According to the County Health Rankings and Roadmaps there was one primary care physician per 3,980 people in Sullivan County, which is far below the state and national averages.

So, health is top of mind for many who live here.

Some organizations, like Sullivan 180, have been working for years to turn these statistics around and ensure better health for every child and adult.

And now more players are entering the game to paint a brighter future.

We commend the Highland health initiative for taking a proactive approach to a lack of primary care in their community.

Creating their own model, the community-centered health facility will focus on overall well-being making sure to take in the community’s wants and needs.

We also applaud Garnet Health for what seems to be a positive move to join Montefiore Health System, Inc., a New York City-based academic health system.

Residents are hopeful that this will expand services right here in Sullivan County, so you don’t have to travel to Westchester or New York City to receive care.

There was a time when many people went to small family doctor practices right in their own towns, but it has become economically unviable to keep their doors open.

As healthcare facilities move further and further away, the impetus to keep or open them here is commendable.
