Some good news for a change. The Sunshine Hall Free Library is planning to hold another Book and Bake Sale. It is scheduled for Saturday July 13th and Sunday July 14th at the Highland Town Hall in Eldred between the hours of 10-4pm. So please mark your calendars. The Book and Bake Sale is a favorite for our booklovers and it serves as the main fundraiser for the Friends of the Sunshine Hall Free Library who use the money raised to buy new books and equipment for the Library and sponsor the Library’s lectures and cultural events. Also, if you would like to donate baked goods or volunteer some of your time for the set-up and break-down of the Sale please contact Helene at the Library at 845-557-6258 during their regular business hours. 

I was able to attend the Greater Barryville Chamber of Commerce’s Winter Warm Up Event last Saturday at the River’s Edge Restaurant in Barryville. The event was completely sold out with one hundred twenty guests in attendance and it was a perfect opportunity to catch up with so many friends. The Restaurant looked beautiful with lovely spring flower arrangements on each table compliments of a very creative local florist- Floral Cottage Weddings and Events located in Glen Spey. The buffet was wonderful with a huge selection of the Rivers Edge’s best offerings. Chamber President and Highland Town Board member Laura Burrell gave welcoming remarks and announced the Chamber’s three scholarship winners from the class of the graduating seniors of the Eldred Central School. Former Town Supervisor Andy Boyer gave introduction remarks for the award presentation to Gibson (known universally as Gibby) McKean as the Board of the Chamber presented him with a plaque for his 60 plus years in the real estate industry and for the many innovative development projects he designed and built during his career-especially his pioneering the real estate market opportunities for second home owners which has become the staple for the industry in Sullivan County. Gibby is a living legend in our community and in his acceptance remarks he expressed his gratitude for our community’s supporting him during all of his business years. In addition to honoring Gibby McKean the Chamber recognized the many contributions of the Highland Lions Club and the successful fundraising projects that has helped our community. Congratulations are in order for the Board Members of the Barryville Chamber of Commerce for hosting such a perfectly amazing evening.

As the weather starts to get better and Spring arrives and our version of “personal hibernation” draws to a close we start looking for things to do that involves getting out of the house and on the road and nothing fits the bill more than the opening of a new local restaurant. As luck would have it a new restaurant just opened up last week. The new place Trailhead Restaurant is located in the former site of the recently closed Mohican Inn Restaurant in Glen Spey. The limited opening menu is very basic with some interesting starters, five salad selections, sandwiches, and burgers, some penne pasta selections and a good standard kids’ menu. I haven’t had the opportunity to get to the Traihead this week, but I have previously eaten at the Mohican Inn and it was a comfortable setting and the Trailhead’s prices appear to be very reasonable on the menu they posted online. For the time being the restaurant will be open on the weekends-Friday, Saturdays, and Sundays from 4pm until midnight.
