Historical Society looks to uncover Scranton Area’s Railroad Past

SULLIVAN COUNTY — When it was a prominent sight from the 1880s through 1957 in the tri-state region, the New York, Ontario & Western Railway was known to transport a vast amount of commodities between the Hudson River at Weehawken and Lake Ontario at Oswego. Chief among these commodities was anthracite coal, so important to the railroad that a branchline was constructed between Cadosia Yard near Hancock, NY to the coal mines of northeastern Pennsylvania. These fabled stories of the railroad’s Scranton Division will be the subject of the Friday, April 5th Ontario & Western Railway Historical Society membership meeting at 7:00 PM. The historic pictures in cities such as Scranton and Carbondale, as well as the many other towns featured along this branch, will be shared by O&WRHS member and former society president Walter Kierzkowski. Growing up in Jermyn, PA, Walt lived through the last years of the Scranton Division’s operations and his rare images reveal its importance within the greater history of the New York, Ontario & Western Railway.

All O&WRHS meetings are held at the Mulberry Senior Center, 62-70 West Main Street in Middletown, NY. The general public is welcome to attend in person. For those living too far from Middletown to view the program in person, ZOOM streaming is offered for those wishing to join the O&WRHS. For any questions about this program or becoming a member of the O&WRHS, please contact President Joseph Senese at superjoe852003@yahoo.com.
