Investing in our health

My home gym has been a work in progress for a few years now. When all of the gyms closed in 2020, it became very important to me to have my own space to workout in. At that time, I purchased a squat rack, barbell, plates, and a few other pieces of equipment. Since then, my priorities have shifted many times.

Creating a home gym can be challenging with the amount of time and money required to make it functional. While it’s easy to look at the necessary time and money as an expense, I prefer to look at them as an investment.

The difference between spending time or money and investing it is that time or money spent is used in that moment, while investing time or money gives us a positive return in the future.

Our first investment in our home gym was very worthwhile. Not only did it make getting a heavy strength training workout possible, it also significantly simplified our lives. I no longer had to drive twenty minutes to and from the gym each day to get a workout in. This investment freed up my time and energy, allowing me to have a more productive day.

As time went on and the gyms reopened, I missed the energy of the gym environment. I noticed that my workouts were not as effective from home and I was skipping them more often. My husband still used our home gym every day, but I realized that I needed a change.

In order to have my workouts be as effective as I was craving at that moment, it was time for me to invest in my health in a new way. I decided to go back to the gym.

Even though I had to drive twenty minutes each way and pay for my gym membership again, deciding to go back to the gym was an investment in my health.

The time traveling back and forth and the money to pay for the membership became the investment necessary for me to not only get my workouts done, but also do them well. The atmosphere at the gym cannot be replicated at home, and I knew that I needed to be around that positive energy when I was in a time of low motivation.

Because of my new goals and priorities, my previous savings in time and money became my new investment in my health.

I am currently experiencing a shift back to wanting and needing to use my home gym. In the time since we first created it, it has become cluttered with things that are not supposed to be stored in the gym space. This past weekend, my husband and I used a few hours on Sunday to clean up the gym, reorganize the equipment and the other storage in the area, and used some money to purchase a treadmill.

Using our time and money in accordance with our current priorities is an investment in our health, because if we didn’t do it, we’d spend a lot of time and energy complaining about our space, wishing it was different, procrastinating, and not seeing the results we are looking for.

By cleaning up our space and purchasing the necessary equipment, we will see the returns we are looking for in the state of our health. Consider if you are using your time and money in accordance with your health goals. Spending it versus investing it will be the difference in your results.
