Greetings faithful readers of the Kenoza Lake news! As promised back in December 2021, I am back writing my Kenoza Lake news column, after having completed 98% of my Town of Bethel Tax collection activities as well as surviving my April 15th income tax filing deadline. This will be an abbreviated column however as I still have some loose ends to attend to.

Well, there is still some snow on the ground, after the late Nor’easter. Daffodils are in bloom though and many forsythia bushes are in bloom. Once I get past my huge income tax filing deadline, it is time to get out in my flower beds and gardens and get things into spring shape. (I don’t rake leaves until after April 15th, not in the fall.) My husband Ray and I have a nice rhododendron bush in front of our house. All winter long it was wrapped in burlap. Last week Ray took the burlap off the bush. Wonderful! However, once we got the snow earlier this week, the deer started to munch on the bush. I got my anti-deer spray out and heavily sprayed the bush.

This past Sunday was Easter Sunday. Around 60 folks attended the service, one of the largest size Easter Congregations in recent memory. Certified Lay Leader delivered the Easter message. The sanctuary was adorned with yellow tulips and daffodils, with yellow chosen as the color of hope. After the service, folks enjoyed a delicious Easter breakfast at the firehouse. We were treated to Bud LeConey’s special pancakes, served with real maple syrup. Delicious! Bud, will you share your special recipe with me?

Last year we had a family of red fox kits living under our next-door neighbor’s culvert pipe. Two years ago, we had red foxes living down the hill from our house. A few weeks ago, I periodically saw a red fox doing the fox trot down the hill from our house. Saw the fox a few times. In the past month, no red fox. I am keeping my fingers crossed that in a week or so I will see red fox kits around.

Two weeks until the hummingbirds arrive. Shortly after May 1st you can put out your hummingbird feeders. In the past, the Rose-breasted grosbeaks, the Baltimore Orioles, and the hummingbirds have arrived on the same day. I have some old oranges in my refrigerator and grape jelly ready for the Baltimore Orioles.

The Mets are amazing this year! I am so happy that Buck Showalter is the manager.
