May 12 — May is one of my favorite months of the year. After the early unseasonal warmth of April, the apple blossoms blooming slowed down and are now at their normal “stage” however we need bees to pollinate the apple trees.

I attended a Federation of Sportsmen Clubs meeting last night and we discussed the lack of bees on the apple blossoms. Although I have had hummingbirds and rose-breasted grosbeaks at my birdfeeder, I have not had one single Baltimore Oriole!

I heard a melodic Wood thrush earlier this week. My mother, Marguerite Brown has had them as had George Kinne. Strange that I don’t have the Baltimore Orioles. A mother bear with four cubs has been spotted on Pucky Huddle Road. Four cubs!  Wow. They are tiny cubs, born earlier this year.

Be alert! Any day now we should have our first fawns of the year! Don’t touch, mama is nearby. Carl Lindsley advises me that he has seen tent caterpillars out. Lisa Schick’s L & M farmstand opens this weekend. A great place to buy your Mother’s Day presents.  The Otto residence has a pair of wrens that are still trying to decide where to make their home.

Ray & I have three wren houses on our front porch.  The wrens go to and from, trying to decide which house to choose. We have some turkey hens that appear to be on nests. They come to the Otto house looking for black-oiled sunflower seeds.

It is so hard for the hen turkey to hatch her eggs and get her poults to the flying stage. After weeks of bravado and strutting around by the tom turkeys, they are left alone to try and raise the baby turkeys. This is not like the Canada geese where the goose and gander raise their young together.

In case you are not aware of it, (and many are not) there is a Republican party primary on Tuesday, June 27. If you are a registered Republican, you can vote in this primary for District Attorney.

The absentee ballots are being mailed on May 12.

Tuesday, May 16th School vote.  I don’t know why the Sullivan West school budget exceeded the 2% property cap. QUESTION: Did the number of students attending Sullivan West remain the same? Increase or decrease? The 2% property cap badge is very deceptive on a per capita/student population basis if the student population is declining.

Did you get up early last Saturday and watch the Coronation of King Charles?  I did.  Interesting how it was really a religious ceremony as King Charles is the head of the Anglican church. If you drive by the Kenoza Lake United Methodist Church, you will note the M.E. in the stain glass window that graces the entrance to the church. The “E” stands for Episcopal. So, if you google the Anglican church, the US Episcopal church, the Methodist Episcopal church, and the United Methodist Church, you will find some interesting history. In fact, one of the few hymns sung last Saturday at the coronation, was also sung in the Kenoza Lake United Methodist Church this past Sunday.  Me, being the organist at the Kenoza lake UMC, find this very interesting; Christ is Made the Sure Foundation. A favorite hymn of the British royal family, as it was sung at Prince Charles & Lady Diana’s wedding, Queen Elizabeth’s platinum jubilee and now King Charles’ coronation.

With all the talk of immigration on the southern border and illegal aliens possibly headed to Rockland and Orange County, I was curious, is Sullivan County sanctuary county?

Answer: no.

I was curious when the sanctuary status started. I encourage you to google the topic and go to Wikipedia and read how the sanctuary movement started in the 1990s. Bottom line, Sullivan County is NOT a sanctuary county.

Save the date! Delicious meal! Excellent cause – White Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church Roast beef dinner, Saturday, May 20th.  I love this roast beef dinner. You sit at these large round tables. Home made dessert cart. Delicious roast beef.  Mark your calendar! This dinner is served at the White Lake Firehouse. Also, the Bethel Lions Club will have a pancake breakfast on Sunday, May 28th at the Kauneonga Lake Firehouse.

I subscribe to Netflix and I watch shows on my phone, I am currently watching A Man Named Otto with Tom Hanks. IMHO, a great movie, that will make you both laugh and cry. Just like Tom Hanks,   I always spell out Otto, namely O T-T-O.

In case you missed it, please check out this past Tuesday’s Sullivan County Democrat, the sports section, Judy Van Put’s column and her eloquent “eulogy” of Ward Blade, the late father of Missy Slater. RIP, Ward Blade. You touched many lives.
