MONTICELLO – At the latest full board meeting of the Sullivan County Legislature on Thursday, November 21, Legislators brought up a discussion of changing the schedule for committee meetings in 2025.
District 5 Legislator Cat Scott originally brought up the idea at the end of the full board meeting and it was briefly discussed as they will talk about the topic again before the end of the year.
Scott noted that they want to keep the meetings on three Thursdays each month and just rearrange committees and the start times.
While the Human Resources Committee meeting has been meeting at 8:30 a.m. on the second Thursday of every month this year, the Legislature wants to push that back to 9 a.m. for 2025.
“We’re going to rearrange the committees and increase some committee times so that we are not running late,” Scott said.
District 9 Legislator Terry Blosser-Bernardo was against the proposed schedule changes.
“I think that this going to possibly create another problem because nothing is going to change,” Blosser-Bernardo said. “We’re still going to be here as long as we are, way past lunch for certain people. And if by chance the meeting does end early, it’s going to keep us here even longer because we have to sit around and wait for the next one to start.”
Blosser-Bernardo noted that she thinks that many of the proposals that have been put forward have been good solutions, but that this one is “just putting window dressing on what’s already happening.”
“I think we are all smart enough that when we get together, we can make some kind of arrangement that works for everybody,” said District 2 Legislator and Chair Nadia Rajsz. “So let’s give it a shot.”
Scott concluded by saying, “That’s what people elected us to do, to figure it out. So we will figure it out.”
At the meeting, the Legislature also passed a resolution on the scheduling of public hearings on the Tentative 2025 County Budget, proposed at just over $301 million.
The first public hearing will occur on Tuesday, December 10 at 5 p.m. and the second will take place on Thursday, December 12 at 9:30 a.m. Both hearings will take place in the Legislative Chambers of the Sullivan County Government Center in Monticello.
