LIBERTY — The Village of Liberty is lowering the speed limit on most village streets from 30 mph to 25 mph in an effort to improve traffic and pedestrian safety.
The change follows the Village Board’s unanimous adoption of Local Law No. 4 of 2026 on July 16, 2026, amending Chapter 80 of the Village Code, following concerns from residents about speeding on residential streets.
The new limit applies to most village streets, with the exception of state and county roads with separately established speed limits, including portions of Routes 52 and 55 and Sullivan Avenue. Existing 20 mph school zone limits on Main Street and Buckley Street will also remain in effect.
The change is intended to improve safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and children, according to the Village of Liberty Police Department, which said in a press release that research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety shows that even small reductions in vehicle speed can significantly reduce the risk of serious injury to pedestrians struck by a vehicle.
The Liberty Police Department will conduct an educational period through Nov. 15, during which officers will stop motorists exceeding the new limit and provide information about the change. Enforcement of the 25 mph speed limit will begin Nov. 16.
Chief of Police Steven D’Agata said speeding on residential streets is among the most frequent concerns raised by residents.
“Our goal is not to issue more traffic tickets. Our goal is to make our streets safer for everyone who lives, works, and travels through our community,” D’Agata said, urging motorists to be mindful of their speed, particularly in residential neighborhoods and near schools.
The department encourages drivers to watch for posted speed limit signs and remain alert for pedestrians and bicyclists.
