Liberty’s Wall of Fame sees two new inductees

Posted

Kurt Scheibe and Maurice Gerry became the newest honorees at the Liberty High School Wall of Fame following a ceremony on Friday, June 28.

Scheibe graduated from Liberty High School in 1962 and has since devoted his life to serving his community. A Liberty postman for 35 years, Scheibe is a dedicated, hard worker. As a little league coach, Scheibe worked hard to ensure the team had everything they needed to play the game. Whether it’s team jerseys, a pitching machine, or building up the ballfield itself, Scheibe has always been one to count on.

Scheibe was nominated for the award by his sister, Mary Heinle, who saw the opportunity to award her brother for all his service to the community.

Gerry is a man made for the limelight. A member of the Class of 1949, the inductee was known as the “Most Entertaining” student. After graduating, Gerry joined the Navy and later resettled in San Francisco for many years, and was an active member of society. Most notably, he worked to raise awareness about the AIDS epidemic, which led to a trip to Washington, D.C. for the cause. Upon returning home to Liberty, Gerry immersed himself in local politics, the arts and preservation. He is the man responsible for the Ms. Sullivan County Beauty Pageant, and worked to endure anyone who wanted to participate could do so.

About a week before the ceremony, the 93 year old took a spill at home, and he entered the stage smiling, riding his mobility scooter, however he decided to stand to deliver his acceptance speech. As a man with enough charisma to fill a stadium, Maurice spoke from the heart, having prepared no notes for what was an excellent speech. The award was presented by Mr. Ron Gozza, who recounted some of the local legends about Gerry.

New York Senator Peter Oberacker (NY-52) and U.S. Representative Mark Molinaro (NY-19) both sent envoys to present proclamations on their behalf. As well, New York Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther (NY-100) presented a joint proclamation from the State Assembly and Senate.
