Lois June Fleming, 94, of Milford, Pennsylvania passed away peacefully on November 25, 2023, at Bon Secours Community Hospital, Port Jervis, New York. She was surrounded by her family.

The daughter of the late Franklin and Elizabeth (Hudson) Laufersweiler, she was born on November 21, 1929, in Monticello, New York. Lois enjoyed discussing peoples’ journeys. She felt no one should stand in judgement because, “You had not walked in another person’s shoes.” Lois wore many hats: Loving Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Daughter, Sister, Wife and Friend. Lois was a true philosopher and experienced life with an open heart. A woman with a strong faith in God. Lois worked in retail locally at Apple Valley Gift Shoppe and The Harford Haberdashery. She enjoyed her work at the Center for Developmental Disabilities. She loved travel and adventure, going to Alaska where she drove sled dogs, on pilgrimages with her sister Betty to Ireland, Israel, Italy and driving across country to California with her daughter Patricia. She was active with her local bowling and golf leagues, serving as President or any role needed. She was inducted in the voter hall of fame honored by the Pike County Board of Elections and The Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. She had strong faith in her country and worked for the board of elections each year at the polls until her late eighties. She was a gardener, an avid reader, loved crossword puzzles, continued to knit and all activities to keep her mind sharp. She loved to stop into her various consignment stores, where she had many friends. She was an avid Yankee fan, Jeter was the name of her dog and when Jeter (her dog) passed, her beloved Bernie Williams, her current dog, came into her life. Bernie remained her dedicated companion. Lois had a way with words, her family fondly referred to her quirky word combinations as “Lo-isums.” She enjoyed a good quote and her favorite was from Katherine Hepburn, “If you obey all the rules you miss all the fun…” Lois was a person who listened and also she loved to talk, she was interested in people, she regularly visited or called her friends and family because she wanted to know how they were, if they needed anything and what they were doing. She firmly felt we are here in this life to help, to serve and to listen to each other. She led by example, feeling actions spoke louder than words, although as a philosopher, she loved words! Life’s challenges made Lois strong, but never bitter, she often said, “grab the ring on this roller coaster called life!” Lois was an amazing lady and a true gift to anyone who was fortunate enough to know her.

Lois leaves behind her sister, Elizabeth Mulvey; brother-in-law, Robert Van Etten; sons, Edward Barber and his wife Cindy Barber and Daniel Barber; daughter, Barbara Jeanne Fleming; daughter-in-law, Michelle Fleming; daughter, Patricia Lutfy, and her husband Greg Lutfy. Also, Lois left behind her beloved grandchildren, Sean, Kelly, Jesse, Julie, Amanda, Michael, Joseph, Grace, Sofie and Jack; great-grandchildren, Quinlan, Lillian, Elizabeth, Sandi, Reghan, Alexa, Christopher, Patrick, Michael, Joey and Julie.

Lois was preceded by her sister, Lucille Farchione and her husband Louis, brother-in-law, Joseph Mulvey; sister, Patricia Van Etten; brother, Franklin (Bucky) Laufersweiler and his wife Ellen; sons, John and Joseph Fleming and daughter-in-law Colleen Barber.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Lois’ honor to Boys Town, St Jude’ Children’s Hospital or the Salvation Army in Port Jervis, NY.

Lois was many beautiful things, yet mostly she was a gardener and as a person who lived her life in concert with the seasons, her family will honor her with that in mind.

There will be a private family gathering in her garden at Renwood Farm to put her to rest in this winter season. As her flowers begin to bloom in Spring, we will have a celebration of her life May 11, 2024, at 12 PM in her garden at Renwood Farm.
