Mamakating holds off 2 Dogwood Road Due Process hearing

Supervisor Robbins reflects on first Flea Market success

WURTSBORO  — The Town Board of Mamakating scheduled a Due Process hearing for an unsafe building located on 2 Dogwood Road.

Town Supervisor Michael Robbins recollected on how this has been a back-and-forth affair for the town. That morning, the town had also found out that the property had been sold the prior week.

The new owner, whose name wasn’t revealed to Robbins, had contacted the Town Building Department the day of the meeting asking what needed to be done to the building while being told that the matter would be on the meeting agenda that same night.

“I kind of recommend that we give him [the new owner] a little bit of time to find out all the things he has to do with the building department to get permits,” suggested Robbins. “[These also include] getting the building up to code and out of violation.”

Robbins noted that the owner talked with the Department and indicated that he was interested in redoing the whole building or, depending on the condition of the foundation, knock the building down and start over.

Councilman and Deputy supervisor Peter Goodman agreed, stating the conditions sounded “perfectly legitimate”.

“If the new owner just bought it, then we can give him some time to see what he’s gotta do,” Goodman stated. “If he could salvage the building, then better to have a house than not.”

Councilman John Rufer inquired what the reasonable amount of time would be. Robbins suggested another month at most.

“At the September meeting (9/16) we’ll revisit this if he hasn’t come and start taking care of it, because it’s kind of in shambles at the moment.”

Robbins reflects on fruitful flea market

The 2nd of August marked the Town of Mamakating’s first Flea Market outside the Town Hall.

The Democrat had previously reported back in April of talks to hold a potential Flea Market on 209 off Exit 113 in order to “get some thru-traffic going from Pennsylvania and Western New York over to the Catskills”.

During his Supervisor’s Report, Robbins remarked that the turnout to the Market “sounded like it was a pretty good day”.

He advertised that if anyone curious had any chances to come down, the Flea Market would be present for “the next month until the end of the month”.

“Parking will be in the back [of the Hall], and then vendors will be up in the front,” reminded Robbins. “The lady that ran it [Emma Dewing] said she had a good day and had about 17 vendors. For the first time it was pretty good so hopefully it will work out for her.”
