MONTICELLO — A 26-year-old man was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center on Thursday after police said he was shot in the leg outside a building at the Sleepy Hollow Apartment complex in Monticello.
Village of Monticello Police responded at 11:04 a.m. Thursday, May 21, to a 911 report of multiple shots being fired at the apartment complex on Terry Lane, according to a press release from Lt. Mark Johnstone of the Village of Monticello Police Department. Officers found the victim outside Building 11, laying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the leg.
The victim was stabilized at the scene by medics from Sullivan County Senior Care and Empress EMS, then medevacked from a landing zone set up at Monticello High School to Westchester Medical Center, where he was reported to be in stable condition, according to police.
Police said the suspects were reported as two males wearing dark clothing, last seen running behind Building 19 in the apartment complex.
Monticello Police are being assisted in the investigation by the New York State Police, Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office and Sullivan County District Attorney’s Office. Also assisting at the scene were the Town of Fallsburg Police, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers and the Monticello Fire Department.
The Monticello Central School District said schools were placed on lockout out of an abundance of caution due to police activity in the village.
The district said it had received reports of a shooting in the village, but there were no reports of any connection to the schools and no threats directed toward district buildings.
Monticello High School, Robert J. Kaiser Middle School, Kenneth L. Rutherford Elementary School, George L. Cooke Elementary School, the St. John Street UPK program and the district’s transportation center were all placed on lockout, according to the district.
Under a lockout, students and staff remain inside the building and visitors are not allowed entry, while operations continue as normal inside the building, the district said.
Anyone with information about the shooting can contact Village of Monticello Police in confidence at 845-794-4422.
