110 YEARS AGO - 1912

The Isaac Walton Fishing Club of Callicoon started on their annual outing to Stevensville on Tuesday evening, fully equipped with “Bait,” tents and other good things necessary and essential for such a daring adventure. In the party are L.C. Vandervort, Gernet Howland, W.A. Hill, A.B. Hunt, Fred Starck, H.H. Aldrich, M.T. Collins and M.D. Vandervort of Deposit. They went by Schultz Bus and about a mile from White Sulphur Springs the bus jumped outofarutandtooktothe ditch where the wheels were buried in the mud so that all the spokes were out of sight. A tree was cut down and used for levers under the able supervision of Fred Grossman, and they continued on their way.
David Fortnam, the Tyler Hill correspondent, died at his home Wednesday morning at the advanced age of eighty-five years.
Theron T. Taylor of Kenoza Lake and Miss Ella Gordon Donaldson were married at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Donaldson of Bethel, on May 14 by Rev. S.R. Spriggs.
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Warren P. Benton of White Sulphur Springs on April 25.

100 YEARS AGO - 1922

Joseph Alpy, who has been an auto mechanic for the past several years, leased one side of the Ihrig building immediately after Edwin Schultz purchased it this spring, and set about equipping it for a first class machine shop.
Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Horrigan of Long Eddy have leased their hotel, The Arlington, for the season, June 1 to October 1, to Messrs. Mayhood and Lawler of New York.
A class of fifteen were confirmed Sunday at the Hortonville Church by Rev. John E. Straub. In the class were Walter Hartz, Edith Neumann, Kathrine Bayer, Edna Werlau, Augusta Enders, Ethel Schmidt, Elsie Roemer, Helen Kautz, Edna Hess, Edward Robisch, Frederick Enders, Lawrence Ferber, Howard Hermann, John Beyer and Edwin Robisch.
A special meeting was held in the schoolhouse Monday evening to discuss better school conditions consisting at Lake Huntington. A committee consisting of Carl Meyer, J. Hoffman, H.B. Lentz (trustees) and John Lerch, Herman Schmidt, D.G. Babcock and Albert Kraack was appointed to find a site and draw up plans for a new building.
Joseph Alpy of Callicoon, Nicholas Paltz of Cochecton and H.A.F. Kern of Narrowsburg were among those receiving citizenship last week.
A plan has been put on foot by the Liberty post of the American Legion to organize a post at Callicoon. When the Legion was first organized throughout the country, a post was organized at Callicoon and named in honor of Private Emmett Turner who was killed in action at the close of the war. Due to the scattered territory from which its membership came, it was difficult to keep the organization up and it was disbanded a little over a year ago. It had the third largest membership in the county at that time.
The Ladies Aid Society of the Callicoon Methodist Church has revised and reprinted the cook book originally printed by St. Tammany Chapter, OES, of Callicoon, in 1924. The books will sell for 50¢ a copy and may be procured from the society or from Starck’s Bazaar.
The Globe Hotel, recently purchased by Mrs. Adelaide M. Anderson, is undergoing alterations. After the busy season it is the plan to transfer the parlor into a drug store and doctor’s office.
A daughter, Edith Louise, was born May 11 to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Beiling. This is their second daughter.
Nearly all the men folks of East Cochecton were called out to combat the forest fire that raged for two days before it was brought under control. Investigation of the fire, that swept 20 square miles of valuable timber and game preserves in Sullivan County during the past two weeks, has been launched by the State Conservation Committee. Besides the burning by forest fires, the Iroquois Club House in Bethel, the Kiamesha Casino and Thompson and the McAuley summer home in Forestburgh were burned. The loss of each is set at $15,000.

90 YEARS AGO - 1932

A miscellaneous shower was tendered Miss Minnie McCoach at the Hadden homestead at Fosterdale last week. Miss McCoach and Harry Starck of Callicoon are to be married in June according to a recent announcement.
Edward Ferber, for several years a mechanic in Bennedum’s Garage in Hortonville, purchased the Charles Hermann farm in the Beechwoods last week.
Lakewood Farm Inn, one of Sullivan County’s most famous and most beautiful summer hotels, joined the procession of hotels which have gone up in smoke and ashes when last Wednesday afternoon it burned to the ground. The striking beautiful main, a mammoth Lshaped structure three stories high, containing 115 rooms with a frontage of 200 feet overlooking Lake Florence, the Inn’s own lake, is a smouldering mass of ruins. It is improbable that the place will be rebuilt.
William T. McCaffrey, son of Mrs. Alice McCaffrey of Pond Eddy, has been accepted for admission in the United States Military Academy at West Point and will enter there July 1.
Relatives and friends gathered last Thursday to congratulate Mrs. Mary Spielman on her 97th birthday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wm. Rittershausen on East Hill. A cake containing 97 candles was made by her granddaughter, Antoinette Rittershausen.
Announcement has been made that the entire faculty at Callicoon High School has been engaged for work next year. Charles E. Lewis has renewed his contract for the third year.
Wilhelmina Caroline Muery, widow of Rev. Muery, died at the home of her son-in-law, and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Alpy of Jeffersonville on May 17.
While young and old were out serenading recent newlyweds, Mr. and Mrs. George Weissgerber, Saturday evening in front of the Weissgerber home on Main St., Callicoon Center, a serious accident occurred when an intoxicated driver lost control of his car, hitting several of those gathered. Miss Betty Fox of the Tumble Inn was badly bruised when the left front wheel of the Whippet coupe he was driving, passed directly over her stomach. Mrs. Frank Zuck of Jeffersonville was also knocked down by the car and badly bruised. The car was found to have no brakes at all.
Thirty-two students of Callicoon High School Orchestra, under the direction of Miss Bourne, went to Middletown Friday, May 20, to play at the Music Festival.

80 YEARS AGO - 1942

Miss Florence Roberts, a former teacher at Callicoon, was married to Kendall E. Bates of Honesdale, Pa., on Saturday.
Corp. and Mrs. Charles Rutledge of Lookout, Pa., are the parents of a daughter, born Friday, May 15; Mr. and Mrs. John Fisher are the parents of a son, Daniel Charles, born Monday evening, both at the Callicoon Hospital.
Fred W. Schadt, lifelong resident of Jeffersonville, and postmaster at that village for
six years, died while seated at the table ready to partake of his noonday meal.
John C. Porr, lifetime area resident, died at home on May 13 after an illness of about six weeks duration. He attended the elementary school in East Cochecton and after finishing there he enrolled in the Damascus Academy for one year, walking ten miles a day in order to further his education.
Howard and Vernon Calkin, sons of Postmaster and Mrs. B.D. Calkin of Lake Huntington, both of whom are in the service, are stationed in Texas and Louisiana respectively.
Mr. and Mrs. B.F. Baudendistel of French Woods and daughter, Mrs. W. Ray and children were recently visitors at the home of Mrs. Baudendistel’s brother, Harry Wormuth of Eldred, where they were shown a wedding dress worn by Mrs. Wormuth’s great-great-greatgrandmother, 195 years ago. The dress, which is of brocaded silk, is still in perfect condition, as is the old lace at the throat and sleeves. It was surprising to note the style was much like the dresses worn today. Mrs. Wormuth also has a parchment deed to a parcel of land in Manhattan, dated 1776. This she expects to present to the Eldred High School.
Francis Leewe, Frederick Carmer of North Branch and Jacob Gross of Fremont Center left Liberty May 13 for induction in the U.S. Army. They will be stationed at Camp Upton.
Miss Marie Isabelle Graebner, niece of Miss Bella Rosenberger of Hortonville, and Joseph John Zalesky of Detroit, Michigan, were married May 20 in St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Detroit.

70 YEARS AGO - 1952

A blaze in the Leonia Hotel at White Sulphur Springs was extinguished this morning by the heroic work of firemen from Liberty, Youngsville and White Sulphur Springs.
Miss Betty Keesler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Everett Keesler of Callicoon, became the bride of Robert Johnson last Sunday in a ceremony performed at Holy Cross Church.
Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Dock of Lake Huntington celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on May 10.
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Long of Callicoon on Sunday; a son to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Haight of Roscoe on Wednesday; a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Arlen Oglesby of Equinunk, Pa., on Wednesday; and a son to Mr. and Mrs. Sam Rice of Equinunk, Pa., on May 10, all at the Callicoon Hospital.
Florence Chadwick, only woman ever to swim the English Channel both ways, will train at the Grossinger Country Club at Ferndale for her attempt to swim the Straits of Gibraltar this summer.

60 YEARS AGO - 1962

Mrs. Helen Venner of Rio was feted on the occasion of her 99th birthday with open house attended by over 200 friends and relatives at her home.
Mrs. Hannah Calkin of Cochecton RD will represent Fosterdale Grange in an apple pie baking contest to be held in Monticello.
Harold Knapp of Mongaup Valley caught a 34-inch, 11 1/2 pound lake trout in White Lake Saturday.
Karl F. Spielmann Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Karl Spielmann of Youngsville, has been awarded a National Defense Foreign Language Fellowship by the Committee of Regional Studies of Washington, D.C. He will further his study of Russian at Harvard University.
At the Callicoon Hospital, it was a son to Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Turner of Damascus, Pa.; a son to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wilcox of Narrowsburg; a son to Mr. and Mrs. Donald Hoffmann of Hankins; a son to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ostrander of Cochecton; a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Vitch of Callicoon. A very busy weekend for the stork.
Adolph Wagner of Callicoon Center is having the buggy formerly used by Dr. Ralph S. Breakey of Monticello to make house calls prior to 1920, reconditioned. The buggy, manufactured by the Studebaker Company, has wheels mounted on rubber, cut down from original steel rims when purchased by Dr. Breakey.

50 YEARS AGO - 1972

At the Liberty-Loomis Hospital it was a girl, May 7, to Mr. and Mrs. Allan McArthur of Livingston Manor; a girl, May 8, to Mr. and Mrs. William Donnelly of Bridgeville and a girl the same day to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Decker of Livingston Manor; and a boy, May 11, to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Raymond of Monticello.
Two teams of Liberty Elks participated in the 25th annual NYS Elks Bowling Tournament in North Tonawanda over the weekend. Bowling were Al Kantor, William Stoddard, Gardner LeRoy, George McLain, Edward Townsend, Bob Kelly, Jack Baker, Gab Damico, Art LeRoy and Bob Fix.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Eltz of Jeffersonville were honored at a 45th wedding anniversary party on May 7 by their children at the Lake Jefferson Hotel.
Fifty hour emblems were distributed to members of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Grover H. Hermann Hospital at the Callicoon facility to twenty volunteers when the group met at DVCS April 24 for a movie and discussion on cancer.
Eighteen members of the Teen Club of White Sulphur Springs visited the infirmary at Liberty on Saturday where each of the young folks adopted a grandparent who is living at the infirmary.

40 YEARS AGO - 1982

The new ShortLine bus terminal in Monticello will open this week on Wednesday. The terminal is a temporary site as ShortLine plans to build a new terminal and bus garage later in the same area.
Sam and Anne LaPolt of Smallwood celebrated 50 years of marriage at the Kauneonga Lake Firehouse, hosted by their children, Sam Jr. and Richard and their wives. The LaPolts were married May 7, 1932.
April Brafman of Monticello has selected to compete in the Miss Empire State Pageant scheduled for May 20-22 in Utica.
Nancy Gayle Hoover of Liberty, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Warren W. Hoover of Maplecrest, became the bride of Francis J. McGovern of Liberty on Saturday, May 1. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald McGovern of Binghamton.
Evelyn Rothbell has been selected as 1982 Monticello Hadassah Woman of the Year in a presentation made at the Concord Hotel on May 12.
Jane Fraser of Hankins has been appointed as postmaster at Bethel.
Monticello Mayor Louis Harmin was named Elks Citizen of the Year at a presentation Sunday by Jack Cossilini, Exalted Ruler of the Monticello Elks.
More than 180 members and other affiliates of the Great Liberty Lodge of B’nai B’rith honored 82-year-old Liberty educator David E. Panebaker Sunday at Congregation Ahavath Israel. Panebaker was chosen for the tribute because of his vast background in education and his interest in children.

30 YEARS AGO - 1992

Norm and Lorraine Niemann celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary at a party held in the VFW hall in Liberty. They were married May 5, 1967 in the United Methodist Church in Liberty.
A new group, The Sullivan County Heritage Alliance, is dedicated to the preservation of all aspects of Sullivan County history and to the dissemination of information regarding that history through roundtable discussions. Chuck Young of Ferndale, a founder and ranking officer of the 143rd Regiment Civil War re-enactors, is the group’s first president. To assist him will be Joe Purcell of Grahamsville and Paul Gerry of Ferndale, as vice-presidents, Alan Barrish of Kiamesha Lake, secretary; and Barbara Schmidt of Mountaindale, treasurer.
Two Sullivan County nurses are among a total of 401 registered nurses statewide to be nominated for recognition in the New York State Legislature’s 1992 Nurse of Distinction Award program. They are Sharon Lilley of Monticello, a nurse at the Sullivan Correctional Facility in Fallsburg, and Hilda A. Miller of Bloomingburg, a nurse at the Otisville Correctional Facility in Otisville.
The 25th anniversary of the fabled Woodstock Festival in Bethel is two years, two months and two weeks away, but the Sullivan County Board of Supervisors is already thinking about capitalizing on it – if Bethel doesn’t come up with a promotion plan of its own. More than two decades ago, half a million people showed up at the late Max Yasgur’s farm in Bethel for three days of fun, frolic and music, turning one small slice of Sullivan County into a destination for the world thanks to television. Ever since, pilgrims have returned by the thousands – to relive the event. Three years ago on the 20th anniversary promises to attract that many and more.
The theme for the 108th annual Memorial Day Parade in Fremont Center will be “50 Years – Pearl Harbor.” Elmer and Ruth Hess will be parade marshals.
The parishioners of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Obernburg celebrated the 100th anniversary of priests coming to that small western Sullivan County area to hold worship services.

20 YEARS AGO - 2002

There are about 500 county residents who do not appear in the county’s 911 database. This became apparent in February when an elderly woman called 911 in an emergency but was not able to speak because of her condition. Because the woman was on a party line, the call was not able to be traced directly to her residence. Residents who are concerned for their safety are encouraged to make the switch to an individual line or be ready to supply a name and address when calling 911. (If calling the 911 center for a nonemergency, such as checking database information, please use 583-7180.)
More than a hundred people packed into the White Lake Firehouse Tuesday evening to air their views on the impacts of the proposed $40 million performing arts center at the Woodstock Music Festival site in Bethel. And without exception, said Gerry Foundation spokesperson Glenn Pontier, they supported the center. The hearing was part of the environmental impact review the Gerry Foundation must undergo to receive building approval from the Town of Bethel and the state. The center is scheduled to open in 2004.
A boy, Patrick, was born May 9 to Bridget and Brian Bidone of Mechanicville at the Saratoga Hospital. The paternal grandfather is Robert Bidonde of Setauket, L.I. Mary Celeste Cawley of Liberty and the late Paul Cauley are the maternal grandparents.

10 YEARS AGO — 2012

Localized flooding from last week’s storm left many bridges chock full of debris – and the Sullivan County DPW was hard at work Friday trying to clear the tangled trees. Between 2 and 4 inches of rain fell last Tuesday, causing some severe flooding in Youngsville, Kohlertown and Hortonville. The western Sullivan County hamlets were quick to respond, as business owners put up sandbags and local fire departments and road crews helped homeowners pump out basements and tried to keep the roads safe.
Town of Callicoon Clerk Janet Brahm got a big surprise Monday night. In the middle of her town’s monthly board meeting, a group of women suddenly popped their heads in. All local clerks themselves, they were there to celebrate Brahm being named Town Clerk of the Year for District 2 of the New York State Town Clerks Association. Brahm was joined by Bethel Clerk Rita Sheehan, Cochecton Clerk Hollye Schulman, Forestburgh Clerk Joanne Nagoda, Deerpark Clerk Flo Santini, Highland Clerk Doreen Hanson, Lumberland Clark Virginia Horn and Retired Town of Forestburgh Clerk Evelyn Parks.
SullivanArc held a food drive in their various locations throughout Sullivan County as part of the statewide “NYSARC Gives Back” campaign to thank local communities that do so much for the organization throughout New York State. The food collected was donated to the St. John's Food Pantry in Monticello and the St. Andrew's Mission Food Pantry in South Fallsburg.
DEATHS: Peggy A. Krum of Beechwoods died Saturday, May 19, 2012... Nancy M. Chesnick of Callicoon died Sunday, May 20, 2012.
