McPhillips secures AEDs for RRFD

Posted

Automated External Defibrillators, or AEDs, are portable medical devices that can save lives by analyzing a person’s heart rhythm and delivering an electric shock.

With a shelf life of 15-20 years, they are a versatile piece of equipment that you will typically see stationed at sporting events or local community centers.

Recently, Sullivan County District 3 Legislator Brian McPhillips secured discretionary funds to purchase and donate three AEDs to the Roscoe-Rockland Fire Department.

“I ran with the promise of giving back to the community,” McPhillips said, “and the discretionary program allows us legislators to do that exact thing.”

The Discretionary Funding Program allows the Sullivan County Legislators to give back to nonprofit organizations serving Sullivan County, broadening their reach and enhancing their offerings.

“We’re in the midst of an EMS crisis, and there are many rural areas within my district,” McPhillips explained. “If this type of program can help save even one life, then it’s worth it.”

Roscoe-Rockland Fire Department Chief Nate Routledge said, “The likelihood of surviving a cardiac arrest can be doubled if immediate CPR and rapid defibrillation is performed. Many times our chiefs, who respond directly to the scene, arrive several minutes ahead of the apparatus. With this vital funding from Brian and the legislature, we were able to replace three outdated AED’s and ensure our chiefs are equipped to give our residents and visitors the best chance of survival should a cardiac arrest occur. We thank Brian for his continued support for our county’s first responders.
