To the editor:

Thanks to Dayna and Amy of Early Bird Cookery in Callicoon who organized a meal train delivered to us at Apple Pond Farm and  Renewable Education Center after the April 22 tornado hit our farm. Twenty five cooks, bakers and food enthusiasts shared their skills with us: salads, casseroles, meat, fish, sushi, vegetarian options, quiche, soup, rice, beans, sourdough bread, desserts, gluten free food and beverages too. These feasts lifted our spirits every day. One woman when she delivered her meal said that she wanted to help us but was not a carpenter or gardener. She asked herself ‘what can I do? ….I can cook!’ and she did. Another enclosed a poem with the meal she brought: ‘Go as long as you can, and then take another step because you will.” We are trying to do that. 

The generosity of the individuals who made and delivered these meals cannot be overstated. The flavors delighted our spirits and nourished our bodies.  We made several new friends. We are forever grateful for their kindness and generosity. We hope that their example of friendship and community connection will inspire others to extend a helping hand to those in need. We will invite them to share the bounty of our organic garden later in the summer.
