JEFFERSONVILLE – At the latest Callicoon Town Board meeting on Monday, April 8, Supervisor Tom Bose announced that Highway Superintendent Mike Haff has handed in his letter of resignation. Bose said that it was a personal decision for Haff, who was not present at the meeting, and there are no bad feelings between him and any of the board members.
The resignation is effective today, April 12, and will be his last day working for the Town of Callicoon. Haff began his position as Highway Superintendent of the town in October 2022. That was when former Town of Callicoon Code Enforcement Officer Kevin Zieres retired and then-Highway Superintendent Kris Scullion took over the position.
The board will also be awarding their stone, asphalt, sand, gas, mowing and hauling bids at their May meeting, which Bose said Haff will make suggestions on.
“He has been a great Highway Superintendent for us,” Bose said. “We have been lucky to have him in this position.”
Bose said that Haff has found employment in the private sector.
“It was a hard decision,” said Haff in his report read by Bose. “But it is the best decision for my family and I.”
Bose also said that it is still too early in the process to think about who they will hire as a replacement Highway Superintendent, but that there are a lot of employees in the Highway Department who will be able to pick up the slack and get the job done.
Other business
Bose also announced that the town has received a grant from Sullivan 180 of $20,000 to be used towards replacing the Basketball and Pickleball Court at Callicoon Town Park at 959 Callicoon Center Road in Callicoon Center.
“That is good news,” said Bose.
The board also set forth a reminder for their special meeting next Thursday, April 18 at 4 p.m. at the town hall at 19 Legion Street in Jeffersonville. The purpose of this meeting is to award a bid for the Youngsville Water District Tank Replacement Project and any other business that may come before the board.
At the meeting on Monday, the board also decided to table the discussion on the hauling bids for the special meeting. The town received two bids for hauling proposals for their cleanups, one from Thompson Sanitation and the other from Jeff Sanitation.
The reason for tabling this discussion is so that the board has an opportunity to speak to each of these bidders and make sure that they will remove the dumpsters on Saturday, to avoid anyone dumping on Sunday.
