Neversink preps for Town pool repairs

NEVERSINK – Although the town pool is fully operational this season, the Town of Neversink is starting to explore significant repairs that could necessitate a long shutdown in the next few years.

The discussion kicked off during the Town of Neversink’s recent board meeting.

During the discussion, the town board explained how the pool has been able to continue operating through a series of repairs and patches, but its age and condition are starting to catch up, requiring a full-scale refresh. Built in 1972, the pool has seen vigilant upkeep throughout the years, but a professional assessment is needed to scope out the exact work that needs to be conducted.

“We know we need to do major improvements or repairs, but we have to get a scope of what those repairs are,” stated Councilperson and Deputy Supervisor Ric Coombe.

The town wants to find an engineering or consulting firm that specializes in working on pools. Officials also discussed possibly issuing a request for proposals, or RFP, in order to solicit firms that can evaluate the facility, suggest repairs and potentially develop specifications for the eventual work.

Coombe warned that the project could require more than one simple repair, as the possible work could involve electrical systems, plumbing, piping and other components of the aging facility.

“We want to see the whole spectrum,” Coombe explained. “We don’t want to just zero in on one thing.”

The town plans to continue monitoring the facility, with Coombe noting that the pool’s pump continues to be inspected daily and is currently working, though there are concerns about other issues, such as the condition of the pool’s wall.

In the meantime, the town would like to keep the pool operating as officials figure out what should come next.
