Neversink ZBA Chair talks trainings, unfilled position

NEVERSINK — Since he has assumed office earlier this year, Neversink Zoning Board of Appeals Chair Ian Constable has had his hands full, according to his statements to the Town Board Wednesday night.

On a timely note, Constable redirected the time for the ZBA meetings to start at 7 p.m. as opposed to 7:30 p.m., which he stated his peers were on board with. He hoped that this sentiment would go over well with the Neversink Town Board as well.

He discussed the two meetings he’s attended since assuming Chair, such as one meeting having Coombe’s Restaurant’s (former Eureka Cafe) signs being passed back to the Planning Board.

“I think Phil [Coombe] wanted to give me something to do,” joked Constable.

Constable also talked about training for board members, a state requirement, with him having completed his four-hour training and the other ZBA members hard at work with theirs.

He explained that he suggested to the Planning Board that, starting early next year, both boards could take their training together and maybe even host group sessions.

“[I suggested] that [so] we can work on those together going forward,” Constable noted.

Constable also brought forward the status of the ZBA alternate position, saying that one person applied but no action has been taken as of the town board meeting.

Town Supervisor Chris Mathews explained that the board likes to have a bigger pool of applicants prior to the interview process. Councilperson Rick Coombe echoed that sentiment.

“My only point has always been that I don’t want to interview until the pool is complete, whatever the pool is,” stated Coombe.

He asked Town Clerk Staci Conjura when the last time the position was advertised, with her answering that it was back in August. Mathews offered that the board could advertise the position again, with Constable adding that the applicant had recently reached out for status on the role.

“That’s on us, we do apologize for that,” Mathews said. “I can have somebody chat with them.”
