SULLIVAN COUNTY - Voters flexed their muscle in the Village of Monticello on Tuesday, sending three incumbents home while electing a new Mayor and two trustees.
Incumbent Mayor George Nikoladas, fresh off a defeat last November for District 9 legislator, was defeated by Rochelle Massey, 530-136.
Massey will become only the second woman in Monticello’s history to become Mayor, the other being famous Kaplan’s Deli restauranteur Anne Kaplan, who was elected in 1973.
T.C. Hutchins, a former trustee, regained his seat with a convincing 533-122 victory over incumbent Carmen Rue.
Janice Davis will also be a new trustee as she defeated incumbent Michael Banks, 544-108.
In Jeffersonville
The Village of Jeffersonville saw only nine of the more than 200 registered voters come to the polls.
Incumbent trustees Brad Haberli and Greg Brewer were both returned to office with eight and nine votes respectively.
The village will be celebrating its 100th Anniversary later this year.
In Liberty
In Liberty, three people were on the ballot for two open seats for Trustee.
Incumbent Robert Mir garnered 77 votes and defeated Edward Fredenburgh, with 38 votes, to retain his seat as a Trustee for a four-year term.
Jayneen Mills was elected trustee, garnering 59 votes to become a new Trustee.
There were also two write-ins for this Village Election: Dara Smith with 55 votes and Joseph Aracci with 5 votes.
