SWAN LAKE — The Sullivan County International Airport’s building project of a new terminal is on track for its scheduled completion in May 2025, said Airport Superintendent Julian Motola on Tuesday, January 28.
Work is “in progress” as construction crews are finishing up the exterior and now working on the inside of the building. The terminal has been designed with an “open concept,” with ample space and large windows that look out on the bucolic Catskill scenery.
Construction crews have constructed geothermal wells which utilize natural heat below the earth’s surface to regulate temperature in the terminal and runways; this heat extraction process reduces the need for fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions.
The project began in Spring of 2024 as a renovation of the old terminal after the airport received a grant from New York Department of Transportation and the Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition, said Motolo. The original terminal was rundown and housed unused office space, so all parties involved eventually came to the decision to replace the old building with a brand new terminal.
Sullivan County Director of Communications Dan Hust said the new two-story terminal will have a graceful look, thanks to the use of architectural support and aesthetics created by glue-laminated timber, and be a 15,000 square foot “showpiece” for the region.
The new terminal, which will be open to the public, will have a main floor lounge filled with businesses where patrons can relax and charge cellular devices and a restaurant upstairs that caters to a wide clientele. Hust described the completed terminal as a “business jet port” where pilots, aviation personnel, and community members can conduct business and enjoy a great meal while watching planes take off and land in the foreground of the Catskill Mountains.
The Sullivan County International Airport, located 20 minutes from New York City by small jet, accommodates mostly private pilots and tourists of the region that visit for outdoor recreation, concerts at Bethel Woods, and the Resorts World Casino; because of its long and wide runway, the airport is also heavily utilized by those in flight training.
