New York State High School Clay Target Leagues State Tournaments are being held this summer. The premier event, the Trap Shooting State Tournament, featured 1,932 athletes from 133 high school teams. This followed a season that saw 2,867 student athletes representing 159 high school teams from across the state.

The New York State High School Clay Target League is a part of the USA Clay Target league, which offers high school and college programs across the country. 19 teams and 127 New York students will travel to Michigan for the National Team Championship this summer. There were 240 teams and 1,800 athletes from across the country expected to compete.

Clay target leagues have grown substantially, with nearly 50,000 participating athletes in the 2023-2024 school year. The non-profit USA Clay Target League is the largest clay target shooting sports program in the world. The league offers trap, skeet, sporting clays, and 5-stand leagues to secondary and post-secondary schools across the country. There is also collegiate level competition.

The league’s priorities are safety, fun and marksmanship, in that order. The league is the safest sport in school, with not a single reported injury since the inception of the league in 2001. Each athlete must complete firearm safety certification before participation.
