Primary winners set for Nov. ballot

SULLIVAN COUNTY — Tuesday’s primary elections narrowed the field for several races that will appear on the November ballot, with unofficial results showing wins for State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli, State Sen. Peter Oberacker and Assemblyman Christopher W. Tague.

In the Democratic primary for state comptroller, DiNapoli defeated challengers Drew Warshaw and Raj Goyle statewide. As of Wednesday morning, DiNapoli had 574,536 votes, or 61.2 percent, with most election districts reporting, according to the New York State Board of Elections.

DiNapoli will face Republican Joseph Hernandez in the general election.

In the Republican primary for New York’s 19th Congressional District, Oberacker defeated Alexander Portelli. Unofficial state results showed Oberacker with 13,568 votes, or 74.15 percent, to Portelli’s 3,864 votes, or 21.12 percent, with 651 of 654 election districts reporting.

Oberacker will face incumbent Democrat Josh Riley in November.

The closest of the major races was the Republican primary for the 51st State Senate District, where Tague defeated Sullivan County Legislator Terry Bernardo districtwide. Unofficial state results showed Tague with 6,631 votes, or 51.32 percent, to Bernardo’s 5,663 votes, or 43.83 percent.

Bernardo, however, performed strongly in Sullivan County. Unofficial Sullivan County results Wednesday morning showed Bernardo leading locally with 1,456 votes, or 66.51 percent, to Tague’s 733 votes, or 33.49 percent.

Tague will face Democrat Michele Frazier, who was unopposed for her party’s nomination, in the general election.

Results remain unofficial until absentee, affidavit and other valid ballots are counted and the election is certified.

Locally, there were three town-wide races in two towns. 

Town of Cochecton voters were casting ballots along the Republican line for town supervisor and superintendent of highways. In the supervisor’s race, Edwin (Ed) Grund won with 114 votes, or 68.26 percent, against Scott Goodman with 53 votes, or 31.74 percent. 

Grund is currently Deputy Supervisor in Cochecton and will face Democrat and Independent Leanna Ballester in the General Election and Goodman will run on the “Cochecton United” line. Current Supervisor Gary Maas is not seeking re-election. 

Also in Cochecton, Kevin Esselman won the primary for Superintendent of Highways against incumbent Jeffrey Daub, with 57.76 percent. 

In the Town of Forestburgh, on the Republican line William Sipos won for supervisor against Gillian Kaiser, with 63.28 percent. Current Supervisor Daniel (Dan) Hogue is not seeking re-election. In the General Election, Kaiser will run on the Democrat and Independent lines.
